I find it very soothing, and sometimes it will completely resolve some minor pain issues that crop up throughout the day. I couldn't say whether it's more effective than a regular heating pad, though, and one thing you should know about these FIR pads is that they are rigid, and therefore in some ways less comfortable to use than standard heating pads.
