Guest guest
Hi Kay, I do not like most of the health food store versions but I buy them. Once I bought a bifido version (no lacto just several strains of bifido) that was taken sub-lingually. Man, that was effective. One package (30 days) took hold and the colony lasted several months. I never bought it again though. I looked it up and it is now called Bifi-15. It is made by Eden Foods. 30 sublingual packets. I think I will order again. I kept it in the fridge but it says you don't have to. Perfect for my college-aged son. No financial interest in this product. My next favorite was a Lacto liquid by Continental but I think the company went out of business. It was $6 for a 30 day bottle and I felt it was effective. Like you, constipation is an understatement. Marti > > Hi all, > > As many of us have gut issues, I wanted to pass along a probiotic that is more effective on me than others. The company is Lifestar, www.lifestar.com. Their probiotic is called Protec. It contains more different species of good gut bacteria than other products I've seen plus enzymes and other ingredients to carry the bacteria and help it multiply. I also take their glutathione precurser, Glutathene. I have no interest at all in this company and nothing to gain if their sales increase. My local MD recommended them to me and I was quite surprised when Protec made a noticable improvement in my BMs. To say I had stubborn constipation until recently, is an understatement. My doc was impressed with them because they are particular in their processing methods using low temperatures and creating clean products. > > Reading Dr. Borody's article in New Science magazine, " Same Poop, Different Gut " and the info on oxalates, led me to do the low oxalate diet and human probiotics simultaneously. That helped my large intestine flora balance considerably. I think what Protec does is help balance my small intestine as it is taken orally. Does anyone else have comments or a probiotic they recommend that contains more than the typical 2-3 bacteria species? Thanks. > > Kay > > PS Protec is a little pricey but so are the best probiotics at the healthfood store. At least it works, for me anyway. Also should mention that since I'm on a protocol to breakdown biofilm whose structure is largly made from magnesium, I'm off magnesium. Magnesium used to be what handled my constipation, so finding ways to restore gut health has been really important. > >
Guest guest
Hello: I haven't started taking it yet, but recently ordered VSL#3 which I found out about by reading various scientific studies on gut issues; since this product was used by researchers to positive results, I figured it worth trying.  I paid $52 for 60 capsules (it comes in two other forms which are more expensive).  The shipment arrived in a timely fashion, very well packed in a tiny little cooler as the product must be kept refrigerated.  I am pasting some further info from the website (vsl3.com) which describes the product, including the fact that it contains eight strains. What Makes VSL#3® Special? VSL#3® is unlike any other product of its kind: Supported by Scientific Data VSL#3® is supported by “Level One†scientific evidence, meaning the data must be from a double-blind, placebo-controlled study that is published in top peer-reviewed journals. VSL#3® is one of the few probiotic preparations with Level One scientific data. All studies cited to support VSL#3® were conducted with the specialized VSL#3® preparation. 450 Billion Bacteria VSL#3® has the highest available concentration of beneficial bacteria with 450 billion live bacteria per packet. The human gut has thousands of billions of resident bacteria. In order to modulate the composition of this gut flora in a positive way, an extremely large amount of probiotic bacteria is necessary. VSL#3® is the only probiotic preparation that delivers enough bacteria to beneficially affect the gut flora in patients with serious intestinal disorders. Strains of Bacteria Scientific evidence has proven that not all strains of probiotic bacteria are the same. VSL#3® has eight strains of bacteria in specific concentrations that have been chosen to produce an optimal intestinal flora. Guaranteed Live Bacteria VSL#3® is stored and shipped cold to ensure that the beneficial bacteria remain alive and viable. When VSL#3® is ordered directly from our call center or website, it is mailed in insulated coolers with ice packs. In pharmacies, VSL#3® is stored behind the counter in the pharmacist’s refrigerator. Medical Food Status A medical food is a specialized preparation that is prescribed by a physician for the dietary management of a disease or health condition. Medical foods are intended to be used under the supervision of a physician. VSL#3® is a medical food intended for the dietary management of ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome or an ileal pouch anastomosis. Click here for more information on the medical food status of VSL#3®. Recognized by the American College of Gastroenterology VSL#3® is the only probiotic recognized by the American College of Gastroenterology Practice Parameter Committee as an effective tool for the management of pouchitis. I've made a note of Protec (as well as Glutathene) as well as Bifi-15 and thank you, Gloria ________________________________ From: marti_zavala <marti_zavala@...> Sent: Wednesday, January 25, 2012 10:26 AM Subject: Re: good probiotic & glutathene  Hi Kay, I do not like most of the health food store versions but I buy them.
