He told us that we were just burned out, overstressed complainers that brought this upon ourselves by bad diet and poor attitude. I really was amazed that this person would stand there and abuse such severely ill people who didn't seem to have suffered from a bad diet or stress related problems until having a flu like illness. The thought actually crossed my mind that the audience would rise as one and beat this psychologizer to a pulp. I wasn't prepared for the horror that was to come. Because the next thing that happened was NOTHING. My amazement increased tenfold as the audience murmured a few polite contradictions and nothing more. In fact I heard people around me start quietly saying " Well, I guess I could have eaten better. " and " I have been under a bit of stress lately. " Staggering! I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I stood up and said: " Look, here is the marathon runner. Here is the tennis pro, the champion swimmer, the Hang Glider instructor. This is ridiculous. We are all committed to a healthy mountain lifestyle in a way that few others can match. This theory doesn't fit us at all. " More horror was to come. Despite a few nodded agreements, people started to tell me to shut up and that I shouldn't anger the doctor. " Why not? He's not listening to us. This is wrong. " The chorus of people telling me to quit causing problems grew until I realised I wasn't making any progress. Not with the doctor and not with the audience. So I sat down and shut up. Now I see Incline Village as a Microcosm of the same horror that has enveloped the world. Doctors get away with abusing their patients with impunity for the incredible and unbelievable reason that these patients will simply sit there and keep taking the abuse. Once again I point out that we are being abused and the answer is to simply agree to stop taking it. Once again I can't help but wonder at the masses of ill people who seem agreeable to accepting this endless tirade of " It's your fault " from doctors. Worse, I get messages from people telling me the same message I heard so long ago from that meeting. " You mustn't speak against the doctors. It will only anger them and serve nothing. " Again I am forced to say " They aren't listening to us. This is wrong. " Again I am told that I cannot ask sick people to adopt a confrontational stance against doctors. That confrontation is already there whether anybody likes it or not. Every person who has gone to doctor after doctor only to be told " It's all in your head " is a victim of this " confrontation " that people tell me that I am trying to create. I believed right from the start that if support groups would only agree to accompany individual members to an initial contact with new doctors en-masse, the abuse that the single person faced would be avoided. With just the slightest cooperation and support from SUPPORT GROUPS, doctor abuse could be stopped instantly. I'm not asking for people to stand there and fight with doctors. I just want the first few syllables of " It's all in... " to be met with a " refusal to accept the doctors verdict " and leave. Warn others in support groups about such doctors. Support yourself by avoiding unsupportive doctors. This endless cycle of sick people endlessly " doctor shopping " and circulating amongst psychologizers means these " denier " physicians are making entire careers out of victimising people and telling each one " I've never heard such complaints before. " and " Your complaints are impossible, therefore they must be imaginary. " All it would take to stop this savagery from doctors is for people to refuse to accept it. Right now. - www.um
Guest guest
. What can we all do to really UNITE and FIGHT? I try to tell at least one person a day what mold can do. I've sold copies of Mold Warriors, called local TV stations, and written letters. I know it isn't enought but I'm trying. I'm willing to do anything it takes!!! Guest guest
Well written, to the point and hopeful. Nice job. In a message dated 7/29/2005 10:27:20 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, johnjmurtaughtoxicmold@... writes: I agree that some doctors are not aware of the neurological or rheumatological effects of the mold, but that does not mean stop looking. When I told him about the toxic mold and my night sweats, peripheral neuropathy and arthritis, the first thing he did was ask if I had a brain-spect. HE brought up the issue of the neurological problems, so he WAS aware of it. He is very open to listening to anything Dr. Shoemaker has to say. A friend of my Aunt, a 17 yr. old boy, has extreme allergies to mold. So extreme, he had to go on Xolair (which is an IgE blocker, which mediates allergic disease). They bounced around from doctor to doctor and finally found one that understood. The parents of the boy had never mentioned neurological problems, but the first things the doctor asked was " How are you thinking? " " Do you have any tingling in your extremities? " " Do you have any arthritis or muscle pain? I've been in support groups where people comparing their doctor experiences find that they all went to see the same doctors and each sufferer was told " I never heard of anything like your complaints before " . But of course they had to pay for the appointment anyway. So it appears that the diagnostic terms: " That's Impossible " and " I've never heard of this before " are actually " dr. Short-hand " for " I have no idea " and " I don't want to deal with you " (But I still want to be paid for this appointment anyway). Doctors are not going to warn you beforehand that they don't wish to help you and that finding out for yourself is going to cost! So the only alternative is for sufferers to " Warn others about such doctors " . And as I propose, the appointment with a prospective doctor must be made beforehand with the understanding that " The Dismissal Diagnosis " will not be acceptible. Take witnesses. Take a copy of Mold Warriors. Take the reams of data supporting the toxigenic effects of molds. Inform the doctor that the days of his " free ride " of just pushing troublesome unfamiliar complaints out the door with a grasping and idiotic diagnosis of " mental illness " are both INEXCUSABLE and OVER!. It'll be tough for an individual to bring this type of concerted pressure for a realistic " doctor response " without support. That's what " support groups " are supposed to be for. We have the data. We have the science. We have the evidence. We don't have to accept abuse and denial from doctors and be forced to pay for it anymore. -
