Some parents complained that their children's breathing cleared up over the summer, meaning something at school triggered their problems. Rhea Central faced severe mold problems back in 2002. Tests showed mold in most all the carpets throughout the school. Budget restraints allowed county maintenance to replace carpets in 14 rooms in 2002, they'll replace 14 more this year, and the rest next year. Marty Derlak, Rhea County Construction Manager: " The initial testing revealed that's where the problem was, was in the carpeting so we've been replacing the carpeting now...since that initial test we have been doing preventative maintenance. " That includes changing filters in each air unit every month, running bleach and other mold-inhibiting chemicals through pipes and drainage units, and cleaning carpets.
