Hello everyone. My daughter, Jackie who is only 19 years old just found out she has AIH last month. She has been in the hospital twice since mid-August. All of her tests have came back neg. for everything until the liver biopsy which the drs. believe it is autoimmune hepatitis. She has been sick for a long time and we didn't know why until she had jaundice and was in the hospital. She is very depressed and I am very worried about her. She is currently taking steriods to treat the illness but they are causing bad side effects. What exactly do I need to expect from this disease and how to deal with it. Should I get a second opinion? Please help! Thank you for your time and take care. Jill

Jill, as Amber and Jerry said, AIH affects each of us differently. It is far from an automatic death sentence. One study shows that most people who respond to standard therapy have normal life spans. The drugs do have side effects; they affect some people a great deal and others far less. Many of the side effects, particularly the cosmetic ones and mood swings, will lessen as the dosages are decreased. Your daughter will have frequent blood tests to monitor her response to the drugs so her dosage can be adjusted as needed. Be aware that the drug therapy increases the risk of osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, and cataracts. Ask your doctor what steps you and your daughter need to take to guard against these problems.

You will want to get one of the basic reference books, such as Palmer's Guide to Liver Disease. If you can't find it in a local bookstore, you can get it through her website, liverdisease.com, or from Amazon.com. Another very similar book is by G. Worman.

Genny -- I'm so glad to hear from you.

Dear ,

Please don't feel that your questions are dumb. Even after being

through this a few times in the past, I went to my doctor last week with a

whole list of questions. I'm not very worried about the biopsy because I

had one in the past that went very smoothly. I know I need to have it

before he'll prescribe the medication that will control my AIH. Thanks for

your concern.

By the way, if you have any other questions, this is the right place to

ask.

Dear --

Unfortunately this is still the way doctors will determine if you do

in fact have AIH. After being diagnosed in 1989, I did not have

aflare-up until 2000, and the first thing the doctor did was a

biopsy! If you're worried about the procedure itself -- don't --

It's no big deal; quick and relatively painless.

I wish you luck, !

I don't have the answer to your question, but I will say that yogurt

culture is not particularly robust. Yogurt will putrify in the fridge

in less than two weeks while kefir can remain fresh and edible for

many times longer. I once had a jar of kefir whey sit in the fridge

for a couple months, and no nasties grew in it (i.e., nothing visibly

icky or smelly developed). My suggestion: get some kefir grains and

start using kefir whey.

Dear

That's not my experience with homemade yoghurt. It is stable and good for at

least two weeks when NOT refrigerated. Under refrigerations mine is good for

well over a month.

I fully culture my yoghurt as I am sensitive to lactase. It is cultured for

at least 24 hours. I make it a couple times a week.

I lost my Kefir grains accidently, so haven't had any for over a year.

Katja,

I just made my first kefir smoothie with vco and can now imagine what

your ingredients were doing in that blender :( I now have a smoothie

with little bits of vco floating in it.

I guess the solution is to put the vco in a warm water quench? It

melts at about body temperature, which isn't *hot*.

Virgin cococut oil melts at about 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hello all! I have been a silent reader for quite some time. I am presently

in the supposedly the most mold studied building in the country. I work at

25 Sigourney Street, Hartford, CT. NIOSH is making it's 3rd trip here to

poke and study.

Our bldg was renovated and people continue to get sick. Just recently we

have had 3 cancer deaths within 3 weeks of each other. They tell us none of

them were building related deaths. We continue to get sick with no one to

help us. Lung disease is rampant (my diagnosis)and so are upper airways

disease. I see that this is a national problem and not just regional. I am

always surprised to read how medical and management individuals have a same

universal response to this issue. If I were a conspiracy theorist I would

say this was known to cause disease and death years ago and they have been

preparing for it way before we even knew these things existed. I had a

microbiologist tell me, after I sent him a copp of the different type of

molds found in this building, that they have know about toxic mold since the

70's and are aware of the cost to fix it and could not afford to so they

would just deny, deny and deny. 4 years later they have followed his words

to the letter. Even with all the tests they still deny any new cases of

sickness in this building and I talk to people everyday who have gotten sick

since renovations.

I worry about the cumulative affect on my body especially since I have been

exposed to asbestos on the job as well!

I pray a lot!
