Crews at Binghamton University are scrambling to get the mold out of the carpeting in five dormitory buildings. An official on the SUNY campus in the town of Vestal — just west of Binghamton — blames the it on old food remnants left behind by the last group of students who lived in the dorms. The situation was made worse by the unusually hot and humid weather in recent weeks — making the conditions perfect for mold growth. A university spokeswoman says it — in her words — " all seemed to happen at once. " The school expects the urgent dorm clean-up detail will cost 200,000 dollars — but the final price may be higher. The situation is so bad some of the carpeting from buildings opened less than two years ago is being ripped up and replaced. Workers have a couple of weeks to get the dorms ready for next semester's students. (Bob ph, WNBF, Binghamton)
