Guest guest
Dear Group, As this is a learning process for me, can someone tell me what adrenal fatigue is, who is likely to get it and how does one manage it or treat it with medication once we know that our adrenals are not functioning well. How is one tested for adrenal fatigue? Is this part of CFS? I know a woman who has had FMS for the past 15 years, and she has told me that she has problem with her adrenals. She is being treated in Poland using steroids for many, many years. Does this sound right to any of you? Mira

Guest guest
Hi Mira, Adrenal fatigue means that the adrenal glands aren't making sufficient cortisol. Adrenal fatigue shares a great many symptoms in common with ME/CFS. Some of us have ME/CFS plus hypothyroidism and adrenal insufficiency. One study found that the adrenal glands of some people with CFS were much smaller than normal. Here is a website to learn more about Adrenal Fatigue http://www.adrenalfatigue.org/ Adrenal fatigue is not a term accepted by many physicians they say that either the adrenal glands work or they don't and you have Adrenal Insufficiency or 's disease. However it stands to reason that the adrenals, like other glands can fail slowly as well as suddenly. Since there are so many symptoms in common between adrenal fatigue and CFS everyone who has ME/CFS IMHO should have their adrenal and thyroid function tested. Guest guest
Dear Beverly, I just did the adrenal fatigue self test and I came up with a border line very high score. Did you have adrenal function tested? Were you treated for the Adrenal fatigue? If, yes do you feel better after the treatment? I want to thank for the information since you have pointed me towards another way to improve my health. I am going to try to get my doctor to test me for adrenal fatigue. I have no idea if he does these tests, but I will ask him anyway. You have helped me a lot! Mira
Guest guest
Hi Mira, Glad to be of service. Only holistic and alternative doctors use the term adrenal fatigue but you can probably get a Cortisol level blood test at any doctor. If your cortisol is low an ACTH stim test might be a good idea before starting any supplement or medication to treat it.That test determines whether or not your adrenal glands can secrete sufficient cortisol. I have been diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency also called 's but I still don't know whether it is from ME/CFS messing up my HPA axis or EBV or other viruses attacking my adrenal glands or whether it is from a genetic cause. In any case, I treat it with herbs, supplements like Isocort and sometimes Cortef (Hydrocortisone) in small doses to replace what my adrenals do not make. I also have hypothyroidism which again my be due to any of the above causes....I take natural thyroid hormone for that when the herbs and supplements no longer worked. Feel better and better! Dear Beverly, What does ACTH stand for? I have to know that since I may not have these tests done in the US. Well, it depends on when I am going to get back there, which I hope is soon, because I have to see Dr. Enlander who is my CFS doctor for the past 15 years. Do you feel better now that you have done something about the adrenals? Thank you so much for writing back quickly! Mira
Guest guest
Hi Mira, From Wikipedia The ACTH stimulation test (also called the cosyntropin test, tetracosactide test or Synacthen test) is a medical test usually ordered and interpreted by endocrinologists to assess the functioning of the adrenal glands stress response by measuring the adrenal response to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).[1][2] ACTH is a hormone produced in the pituitary gland that stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol.[2] During the test, a small amount of synthetic ACTH is injected, and the amount of cortisol, and sometimes aldosterone, the adrenals produce in response is measured.[3] This test may cause mild to moderate side effects in some individuals.[4][5] This test is used to diagnose or exclude primary and secondary adrenal insufficiency, Yes, my cortisol is low and same with thyroid hormone so for me, replacing those hormones makes a huge difference in how i feel. I did try nutrients and herbs first however. The ACTH stim test will only be accurate if you are not on any drugs, herbs, supplements that effect adrenal hormones. Dr Enlander is also my doctor and it is his protocol that is working for me. However I was taking both thyroid and adrenal hormone for years before seeing Dr Enlander so he has nothing to do with those for me. Hope you find out what works the best for you.
