FLORENCE - Florence School District 1 reported that it has taken

several measures to eliminate mold at Greenwood Elementary School.

The district has been working on the problem at the school after

parents of Greenwood students told Florence School District 1

officials earlier this month of their concerns about mold in the

library and classrooms.

" We have used an eclectic approach to dealing with the moisture

concern at Greenwood by employing the services of clean-up crews,

air quality control experts, engineers, school nurses and

maintenance workers in order to fix this problem, " interim

superintendent Larry said in a press release from the

district.

" Florence School District 1 clean-up crews have worked relentlessly

to ensure that the media center is a clean and safe place for

students, " he said.

This past weekend, a crew of 25 staff members cleaned the media

center from floor to ceiling.

The crew also cleaned shelves and each of the 19,000 books in the

media center. In addition, the media center is being monitored daily

for humidity, and de-humidification in the center is also continuing

to take place.

" Parents are being made aware that the carpet in five of the

school's classrooms will be replaced with tile by Tuesday of next

week, " principal Hartwig said in the release.

A consulting firm also advised the replacement of the existing 10-

ton heat pump unit with two new five-ton units, and to further

replace all the duct board with new insulated, galvanized steel

ductwork including new air devices.

" We are taking these recommendations seriously, " said.

The district's board of trustees will meet Monday to discuss the

problem
