Parents told Florence School District 1 officials Thursday night of

their concerns over mold in the library and classrooms at Greenwood

Elementary School.

Interim superintendent Larry called the mold a " very serious

problem " and said the district was working aggressively to correct

it.

Jay Lawrimore, who spoke for the group of parents, asked the school

district to remove carpet found to be moldy after the summer. He

also requested a schoolwide inspection for mold as well as a

schoolwide cleanup.

An architectural firm looked into the problem Tuesday, said

at the meeting. The school district needs to replace the carpet, but

first must determine the source of the mold, he said.

also said mold was growing on the covers of books in the

library, which he said will be closed until the problem is solved.

The district discovered the mold Monday, assistant superintendent

Lionel Brown said.

All district property was cleaned with shampoo during the summer,

Brown said. He also said that if the air conditioning is turned off

during the summer, that can cause mold to grow.

The district also replaced some moldy carpet at the school with tile

in June, Brown said.
