SODA FREAKSWednesday, 19 March 2008Oh how I remember the days when I used to drink five or six ice-cold Coca-Colas a day. You may remember, back in the old days, how they came in those little 6-ounce curved bottles, shaped like Marilyn Monroe! And their curvaceous shape just fit so perfectly into my hand!I'd lean back as I let that frosty bottle of Coke begin to cascade down my thirsty throat. And after about four sensuous gulps like that, the bottle would be empty and the smile on my contented face would evolve into a big satisfied...ahhhh!

Then I can remember when diet- sodas came out. The original one was called Tab, which is actually "bat" spelled backward. I found out that if you drank too many Tabs, you went a little batty! LOL.Soon, all of the major soda companies came out with their own versions of diet-sodas. And right along with everyone else, I jumped onto that diet-soda bandwagon. Oh, it became almost sheik in those days to drink Diet-Coke or Diet-Pepsi.

In the early days of diet soft drinks, those beverages often had a very tinny back-taste. To me, it was sorta like having a chemist doing some kind of experiments in my mouth! More recently, while the soda companies have worked on improving the taste, sodas and diet- sodas have both taken a bit of a beating in the press. The truth was revealed.Regular sodas were nothing more than sugar, water, food-coloring and chemicals. And some of the substances in them were so strong that they could actually remove rust from bicycles! And I'm telling you, the news about diet-sodas was not much better. They were called diet-sodas because their sugar-content had been removed. And in place of the sugar, we were getting salt, a chemical sweetener and lots of other ingredients whose names I can't even pronounce! More bad news...a few weeks ago, a study came out that revealed drinking those no-calorie diet-sodas may cause us to want to eat more food than usual. Oh, oh!When I'm on my show on Sirius Satellite Radio, I talk with people who often weigh anywhere from 200 to 400 pounds or even higher. And guess what? Many of them are big soda or diet-soda drinkers. Last weekend, I talked to a lady who drinks six cans of diet-sodas daily. I told her to think about it, that's 42 cans a week or, roughly, 300 cans of diet-soda...a month! I told this lady to cut her diet-soda consumption down to no more than one-a-day and to then watch as her extra pounds began to go away!

And when I've given out that kind of advice and people take it, I've often had them call me back on the show with some good news. That is, sure enough, when they dumped the diet-sodas, they were also able to dump a lot of weight, right along with them!So if you're one of those addicted to sodas, diet or regular, please, wean yourself off them! Why? Because, it's a fact, the beverage your body needs more than any other is good old water! Remember, your body is actually made up of 60-65% water and it's so very important for you to replenish your body's water supply, everyday!

Now I'm not going to lie to you. Every now and then, I'll have a little can of Coke poured over some crushed ice garnished with a little maraschino cherry. And I nurse my glass of Coke like a newborn baby. It's a rare treat I allow myself to have. But in the meantime, I want you to cut way back on your own soda and diet-soda consumption. I'm telling you that when you do, you'll cut down on your waistline, too!Love,
