[The following is the details of the Australian aid to India presented in

the Australian Budgent statement 2003-2004. Moderator]

India

Country program estimate $14.0 million: Estimated other ODA $8.6

million: Estimated total aid flows $22.6 million

Australia will support three major new activities in India in 2003-

04. Technical assistance will be provided to the governments and

communities of Shillong and Gangtok to improve water and

environmental sanitation services for around 400,000 people. This is

part of an innovative partnership program that includes the World

Bank and the Asian Development Bank in efforts to improve regional

water and sanitation services. With nearly one per cent of India's

adult population (or four million people) estimated to be HIV

positive, Australia will help reduce the spread of the epidemic in

Delhi and in three north-eastern states. A new Public Sector Support

Program will promote financial, health and education reform.
