ONE POUND

Monday, 11 February 2008

I often receive letters and E-Mails that sound like this:

, I am just so discouraged! I'm eating very healthy and I exercise everyday. And I was feeling really good about how good I was doing, that is, until I stepped on the scale this morning. I was so disappointed, after all of my hard work, to see that I had only lost one pound! Why...why can't I do better?I have to tell you, I get a little irritated when I receive correspondence like that one. Let me explain why. See, we live in such a fast-paced society and, as a result, we want our rate of weight-loss to take a fast pace, too. Now, how many of you have tried stupid diets and lost, say 5-8 pounds in just one week? Yeah, you lost it all right but, be honest, didn't those pounds you lost come right back on you immediately, it seems?I've told you, so many times before, there's no healthy way to lose weight fast. By doing so, you can really put your health in jeopardy. But I want you to consider a few things. When you lose one pound in a week, that means you have eliminated 3500 calories from your body. Now let's do a little math. If we divide 7, (for seven days of the week), into 3500 calories, you get the number of calories you would have burned each day to lose that one pound in a week. See, you have burned and extra 500 calories...a day!And you know what? I think that's fabulous! Keep that going, 1 pound a week...and in one year, that equals 52 pounds you've lost! And hey, that's not just a good thing, it's a great thing! Now, if you want to lose a little more weight each year, you have to increase the number of calories you burn daily. Let's say you add 15-20 more minutes to your daily workout routine, really watch your food and burn an additional 250 calories daily. That would equal about an extra 1750 calories for the week or another 1/2 pound. That's 1 1/2 pounds lost for that one week. Do the math again and, see? That equals nearly 80 pounds lost for the year!I know a lot of us don't like math but, hey, the math doesn't lie! And if you cut an extra 100 calories here and there, your total weight-loss for the year can be even more than 80 pounds in a year! And the good news is that lots of people have done it, too!So, please, don't feel lousy when you've lost "only" a pound in one week! I say you should congratulate yourself and I hope you'll work to keep that one pound off as you move on to losing the next pound! So the next time you lose a pound in a week, I want you to send me an E-mail that proclaims..., I don't have a frown because I lost another pound! It's Monday, my friends. So I hope you'll get on the scale and see just how good you did last week. I'll see you Clubhouse members in Chat tonight!Love,
