Guest guest
I DON'T KNOW WHY Tuesday, 12 February 2008 When people come to me wanting help to lose weight and get in better shape, I always have a few questions for them, right up front. You know, questions like this: Why can't you stay on an exercise program? Why can't you stop eating all the sweets that tempt you? Why can't you stop living in the past? And the answers they give me are usually these four words: I don't know why.I don't know why I bring potato chips home. I don't know why I stop at Burger King five times a week. I don't know why I never use the treadmill I have in my den. I don't know why I can't stay focused. I don't know why I weigh this much. And you know what I end up saying back to them? I tell them...Your answer isn't good enough because you really do know why!I remind them that the answer to their question why is inside them. They don't know why? Well, here's why...You just haven't seriously asked yourself the right questions and searched your heart enough for the answers to why you are overweight. There are reasons why you're lazy about the exercise. There are reasons why you sit down for dinner and eat as if you're eating enough for two people. There are reasons why you can't stay on a healthy eating plan for more than a few days. And what are those reasons? Oh, there are so many. You're lonely and food comforts you. You're depressed and food comforts you. You're sad and food comforts you. You're going through a divorce, lost your job, having marital problems...gosh, so many reasons you have to be upset about things. And where are you turning for help? Do you know? Well, sure you do, to food, of course!I'm not going to lie to you. There is something oddly "comforting" about downing a couple of cheeseburgers after someone has hurt your feelings. But I don't want you to use that I don't know excuse anymore for why you overeat and are overweight. That phrase should never be a part of your weight-loss vocabulary. You know how much I believe in journaling, don't you? Well, you've got to journal and write down the emotions that are at the root of your taking such dreadful care of yourself. You have to learn to face those emotions without tinkering with your health. And once you find the answers to the questions that are haunting you, you can be more at peace with yourself. So today, make some time to figure out what's eating you so you don't overeat anymore. Did you plan your meals yesterday? Did you get in 45 minutes to an hour of exercise, yesterday? And if you didn't, my question for you is why? And don't you dare answer me with I don't know why. Because I know you know!Keep searching for the truths in your life, today and everyday.Love,
