's Daily Message FridayJanuary 25, 2008ACHILLES' HEEL

We all have two Achilles` heels. They`re right above the backs of your feet. They`re very weak spots of your body and, if we`re anything like the warrior from Greek mythology by the same name, those little Achilles` heels can do us in, if we`re not careful!

Many of you know the story of Achilles. Didn`t you see the movie, Troy, with Brad Pitt? Achilles was a very powerful Greek warrior. (I`m sure he must have worked out really hard, seven days a week!)

But as strong and fit as he was, he ran into trouble during the battle for Troy. Brad, uh, I mean Achilles, was shot with an arrow that pierced one of his heels and...down he went! He was hit right in that old weak spot! Then he was struck by more arrows, again and again and that`s how he died. But it all began with that one weak spot, hence we get the term Achilles` heel. It refers to that weak spot in all of us.

Your body has other weak spots and one of those weak spots might be called, well, your Achilles` mouth! Okay, I know that may sound just a little bit rude but we may as well be honest. There are certain foods that can bring you down, just like Achilles was brought down by his heel!

Do you know which foods would be your Achilles` heel?

Could it be sweets? Did you grow up in a house where there was always a box of cookies or candy in the kitchen or dining room?

My father would buy a two-pound box of Russel-Stover Chocolates every Friday. And wouldn`t you know? He`d count every piece in the box before he put them out. (Hey, with me around, that was probably not such a bad idea!)

Were you raised with donuts in the morning and candy bars in your school lunch box? Did you have desserts more than three times a week when you were growing up? Were you even rewarded with sweets?

One time, when I was a kid back in New Orleans, I fell in the back yard and really skinned my knee pretty bad. I ran into the kitchen to show my mother. She cleaned it up, put some medication on my nasty scrape and really doctored me up. Shirley told me, "Since you were such a brave little boy, I`m taking you to Woolworth`s to get you a banana split!

Whoa! That was enough for me to hear! The next day, I fell on the other knee, (on purpose), hoping for a repeat reward. But Shirley didn`t buy it this time. Which meant she didn`t buy me another banana split, either!

Could your Achilles` heel of foods be salty foods? As you know, my nickname as a kid was "Dicky." And ten blocks from our house in the French Quarter was an actual potato chip factory, home of Dicky`s Potato Chips! And oh how I loved munching on my namesake chips!

Every Sunday, my mother would take me to the movies. At the movies is where my love for salty popcorn was born. I always made sure I had a large-size bag and would try and eat it slowly, to make it last through the entire feature. But you may not be surprised to hear, that never happened! My bag of popcorn barely made it through the coming features. LOL!

I was raised with a salt shaker on the dining room table and I salted everything. My favorite things to salt were mashed potatoes, sliced tomatoes and corn on the cob.

Could your Achilles` heel of foods be fried foods? Oh, fried chicken, fried potatoes, fried onion rings, chicken-fried steak...fried, fried, fried! My hometown took pride in all things fried. As a matter of fact, right now, I can close my eyes and visualize myself eating a juicy drumstick. Mmmm, so crispy, so golden brown, so crunchy...so greasy!

There was always a can of lard near the stove in our kitchen. And it wasn`t a small can, either! I would have to say that I had something fried, just about everyday of my life.

So, are one or two or maybe even all of these foods among your Achilles` heel of foods? Are any of them your major weaknesses?

Well, I just want you to remember that when you eat these foods, you`re shooting an arrow into your heel. And if you keep it up, the next arrow will go straight to your heart. You`ve gotta stop it!

Now that you`ve acknowledged your weaknesses, I want you to find the strength, the determination and be strong enough to say no whenever they come your way.

Don`t let any food-arrows pierce the heel of your weight-loss efforts!

Love,
