OFF TO THE CASINO!

Friday, 16 May 2008

I'll leave New York City later today and take a flight over to Buffalo. I'm making a return engagement for the Seneca Casino. I was there once before and really had a fantastic time. And oh, I love going to casinos to do my thing.See, my mother, Shirley, just loved playing the slot machines. I remember the first time I introduced her to them. In the 80's, I took her and brother, Lenny, to Las Vegas because my father used to take my mother there for vacation back in the 50's. Back then, there were only a few hotels on the famous strip and I do mean only a few!

I remember how my folks would always send my brother and I a post card from Vegas. And they usually got back home before the postcard even arrived. LOL! (E-Mails are a lot quicker these days, huh?)Shirley, Lenny and I were walking though Caesar's Palace and decided to go into the casino. And there in front of us was a dollar slot machine. "Honey," Shirley said to me, "I don't want to play the dollar machine. I'll be okay with one of those quarter machines over there."Well, I didn't listen to her and went and got 50 silver dollars and placed them in a cup for Shirley. I showed her how to insert the coins and pull the lever. I remember how when she put that first coin in, her face lit up like a Christmas tree!I walked over to another slot machine and begin playing the slots with my brother. Then, only a few minutes later, I heard all of these bells going off! I looked over at the machine Shirley had been playing as the machine was blinking lights and making noise like crazy! But Shirley was nowhere to be found!

I ran over to the machine and her purse was still right there. Lenny found her hiding in the next aisle. Shirley thought she had broken the machine or something!Lenny dragged her back over and, come to find out, Shirley had hit that slot machine's jackpot and had won $15,000! And what did my mother do? Well, she took all of the money and ran...except for one silver dollar which she put back into the machine. "That's for the house," she said!So every time I go to teach a big exercise class at a casino, I think of that story and always play a few coins in honor of Shirley.

Hey, Shirley! Bring me some luck when I hit Buffalo and drop those coins in the slots for you this weekend!I can't wait to meet everyone in Buffalo and make them sweat!Love,
