FAST FOOD FAMILIES

Wednesday, 14 May 2008

Last week, I was in two major airports in Los Angeles and Chicago. They're both huge and especially the Chicago airport, O'Hare International.I love walking through airports. Oh, I don't like to just sit in the terminal waiting for my flight. So that's what I do while waiting for my plane to leave...walk! There are so many stores to visit in both terminals and I like to pick up a few magazines to read on my flight.

One thing I notice during my airport walks is that everywhere you go in one of those big terminals, there are plenty of restaurants and they're selling all kinds of fast foods! And we Americans may as well admit, that's the way we like our foods, fat and fast! Need proof?

Well, as I walk past those airport fast food places, oh, all you have to do is look at the lines inside them! They are not only long but are often filled with entire families waiting to get something to eat.Everybody's there from little kids, to teenagers, to parents and even grandparents. They're all in line to get that big dose of grease before they fly. Once they've picked up their orders of burgers, large fries and sodas, they find a spot in the restaurant where they can all sit and dine together. They take out those burgers and fried chicken sandwiches as Mom and Dad squeeze those little packages of ketchup next to the kids French Fries or onion rings.

Oh, how wonderful it is to see a whole family sitting there feasting on hundreds of fat grams and empty calories. Sadly, our country is now filled with "fast food families." And that's very upsetting to me. When a kid sees his or her parents eating all of those processed foods, they begin to believe it's okay for them to eat like that, too.Today I leave for New York City and from there I'll go on to Buffalo, New York. I'll be doing some press on Thursday and a personal appearance at Penn Station in the afternoon. (Check my calendar for details.)After that, I'll take my flight on over to Buffalo to teach a big class there at a casino. I know that when I go through those airports again, there'll be those long lines at the terminal's fast food joints. Oh, boy!

Look, if you're a parent, living on fast foods, it's not okay teaching your children to eat like this. You've got to make some changes! It's okay to have that thin hamburger with special sauce on a fluffy bun every now and then. And it's okay for you to have a small order of French Fries, once in a while. But you have to always make sure you plan for those kinds of meals. You can't eat like this everyday and you certainly shouldn't be passing such bad eating habits on to your children. I mean think about it, when you eat one of these meals, you may have consumed enough calories and fat grams for just about for a whole day!So parents and grandparents, I want you to eat well and teach those children to eat well, too!Love,
