THE TABLE

Monday, 02 June 2008

The table was invented for many uses. It's nice to center a beautiful vase of flowers on, or to place some framed pictures of the special people in your life. Tables are also great for playing checkers, chess or some other board game on. The table is also a great place to display books, coins or stamps. But there is one other use for the table and that is for dining. Hey, that's why it's referred to as the dining room table.

The dining room table has a "sister" and that sibling would be the kitchen table. These two tables have something in common. And that is they were meant to hold utensils, plates and dishes of food on them to be served. They're so easy to use. Put the food on the table, pull up a chair, say grace and...eat!But in our fast-paced world, we have found other places than the kitchen and dining room tables to eat. A lot of people like to eat at their desks at work. There, they eat while reading their E-mails or while chatting with someone online. And gee, that's not like really having a meal, is it? Not to me!

There are other people who like to eat in their cars. Many Americans have jobs in sales that require them to be in their cars traveling from one client to another. And in a way, their cars become like their second homes or at least an office on wheels. And in between all of their rushing around, a lot of people try to fit a meal in the middle of their busy schedules, even while they're on the road driving. You would not believe how many people I see eating while driving. (I'll bet you've seen them, too!) And some of them are eating, driving and trying to smoke, all at the same time. And when they try to add talking on a cell phone to all of that, well, they're just asking for trouble!I've seen people trying to gobble slices of pizza or a taco while driving. I've seen them with one hand wrapped around a big sloppy hamburger with the other hand on their steering wheels! And isn't it nice, ketchup, mayonnaise and special sauce all dripping onto the steering wheel, down the front of their shirts or blouse and onto the seat between their legs. Lovely sight, right?

I've seen people drinking coffee and trying to gobble a donut while driving. I also see people walking down the street eating. They've got a plate or little bowl of something in their hands trying to eat, walk and talk all at the same time. Talk about multitasking! And let's not forget those folks with the hot dogs or ice cream cones in their hands. If you're one of those people I described, you have to start eating properly. And I mean you have to find a table to sit at when you eat. I'm sure there's an area at work where you can actually sit down at a table and eat. And if there's not, you should talk to your boss about setting up an area where all of your fellow employees can sit, eat and take time to have a good meal. Tell your boss it's time for he or she to invest in a real table and a few chairs.

And please don't eat while driving. If you have lunch with you, pull over, get out of the car and find a nice place like under a shady tree or in a nice park to really sit, take time and have your meal. That's right, sit down, take some time and really enjoy your healthy meals. Your body needs that break so it can digest your food properly and as it does, you will lose weight properly, too.Happy dining!Love,
