GOD, I'M A DANCER!

Friday, 18 April 2008

The title of this message is a line from a very well-known Broadway show called A Chorus Line. I'm sure you've heard of it. The show premiered several years ago but returned to Broadway about a year ago.I saw the original production on Broadway and have seen it again in at least five other cities. Oh, and I love A Chorus Line! The show is about these performers who all just want to dance their lives away. It follows their auditions to see which of them would be picked for the chorus line in a big stage production.

When I saw this show the first time, I thought about my childhood. As long as I can remember, I know I just loved to dance. When I was a kid, my father always had the record player going. And I would catch him dancing in the kitchen while he was making shrimp jambalaya. And I used to watch my mother dance in her bedroom while she was listening to the radio and getting ready for work. My mother had the teeniest feet, size 4 and when she danced, it was if she were dancing on air.I loved watching all of the dance shows on TV when I was growing up. I never missed an episode of American Bandstand. I would stand in front of the TV watching the show and pretend I was there dancing right along with all of those teenagers groovin' to the latest hits of the day.

Recently, I picked up a new book called "Not The Girl Next Door." It's a biography of Joan Crawford. From the time she was a child, Joan, (whose real name was Lucille), loved to dance, too. And she dreamed of being a professional dancer. But one day, Joan had an injury that landed her in bed and off her dancing feet for a while. And for a time there, she was afraid that she would never be able to dance again. But thankfully for her, she did get better. And let me tell ya', Joan didn't walk when she got back on her feet again...she danced! In many of her earlier movies, Joan appeared more often as a dancer before she became known more for being an actress. But the thing she loved most in life was tapping her feet to a great beat.

Are you like me and Joan? Do you have dancing in your soul, too? Since Dancing With The Stars became such a huge hit, dance studios have opened up all over the country. And they're teaching this latest crop of dancers moves like tap-dancing, cha-chas, salsas and waltzes. The classes are not very expensive. In fact, some dance classes are even taught in city community centers, free of charge. Why did Joan and why do I love to dance so much? Well, it's because dancing makes you happy. Dancing makes you sparkle and it gives you a fabulous glow. And one more thing dancing does is that it makes you feel young. When's the last time you put in one of my DVD workouts and danced with me? Well, put one in today and let's dance the night away, shall we? And please, get plenty of exercise in for that dancing body of yours over the weekend!Love,
