RUNNING OUT OF STEAM

Thursday, 17 April 2008

There are so many who write to tell me of their great weight-loss successes. They send me before and after photos of themselves to show how much weight they've lost. Sometimes, the after photos don't even look like the same person in the before photo. But there's one way I can always tell it's the same person. How? Well, I only have to look at their eyes. See, no matter how much weight you lose, you will always have the same eyes. And I really read a person's eyes. In fact, everything you want to know about a person is revealed right there in their eyes.

I call many of the ladies, gentlemen...and teens who write to tell me about the weight they've lost. I have to tell them how very proud I am of them. And they tell me how proud they are of themselves, too.(And they should be.)They let me know what they've been eating and how much exercise they've been doing. But then the joyful conversation often takes a bit of a sour turn. It begins with them telling me that they have only 10, 20 or 30 more pounds to lose. But they just can't seem to shed those last few pounds.First, let me say that I know it can be a little frightening to lose weight. And that's especially true if you've been overweight for a very long time. You've become rather "comfortable" with your weight. In fact, your weight has become a bit of a security blanket for you. So shedding pounds is not just a physical thing, it's an emotional one, too.

Sometimes people lose weight and they get scared. They think they'll become different people and in a way...they will. And as they get closer to reaching their goal weights, a little fright jumps into them. They begin having little talks with themselves that go kinda like this:Oh, I'm so close. I hope I don't blow it this time. I'm right near the finish line. I can see the yellow tape. I want to break through that tape and reach my goal. I want it so bad but...I'm still so scared!I know, you've been working on losing this weight for so long and then when the weight really begins to come off, it's sort of a shock to you. But after you go through all of those emotions, you get more determined than ever to lose the rest of the weight...finally!So there you are 10, 20, or 30 pounds away from your goal. You're getting on the scale lately singing choruses of Hallelujah! And I say to you, keep on singing and ...keep on fighting to lose those last pounds! Don't be afraid of reaching your healthy weight goals.

A lot of people tell me that when they get close to their weight-loss goals, it seems like it's harder than ever to lose those last pounds. And you know what? Some people tell me they begin running out of steam as they approach their goals. But when that happens, you really have to step up on your exercise and, believe me, you will see the results you want. And remember, you still have to be careful with your portions and keep working on your attitude. So today, push yourself a little harder. Get those last few pounds off so you can fit into your bathing suit this summer. Yeah, that's right, I said bathing suit!Love,
