THE SLACKERS

Wednesday, 09 July 2008

Sounds like an interesting column today, huh? But no, I'm not going to review the latest horror movie...I'm talking about The Slackers, period! What do I mean? Well, listen up...

Jeanne wrote and told me that after seeing a photo of herself taken at a family reunion a while back, she decided to get serious about dropping some weight. See, when she used to look in the mirror before, she didn't think she looked so bad. But after seeing that photo of herself from the reunion, she realized that she had been in denial about her weight. So Jeanne went to work! She began by cleaning up her eating habits and planning healthy meals and snacks for herself. And she started something else she had not done in a very long time. She began working out! Oh, Jeanne was really going! In the first week, she lost 5 1/2 pounds and boy, was she ever elated to get off to such a great start! Week two, she lost four more pounds and she lost another three pounds in each of the next two weeks! As you might expect, Jeanne was feeling pretty doggoned good about herself. Uhh, maybe too good? Because after about the first month of being so good and working so hard, Jeanne became...a slacker!

Almost overnight, certain foods came creeping back into her meals. Fattening foods. Greasy foods. Salty and sugary foods. And to make things worse, Jeanne also began taking off days from her exercise. She felt like she deserved it. Yep, Jeanne was feeling her oats and...feeling her French Fries, too!In only a week's time. she'd gained back 4 1/2 pounds. Jeanne felt so horrible about herself that she ended up stopping her healthy lifestyle altogether. Well, that wouldn't do! I got hold of Jeanne and told her that she had to get back on program right away. There could be no more slacking! Even with the weight she'd lost before, Jeanne was not even close to her goal. She had another 40 pounds to lose. But you have to know, as Jeanne discovered, that the minute you slack off from your weight-loss program, you fall into that dark-well of being an unhealthy person. And let's face it. You can work so hard for weeks to lose weight and in just one short week of carelessness, you can undo much of your hard work by gaining those pounds you lost right back.

You can never slack from this good health mission you're on, my friends. You have to remind yourselves that this new healthy lifestyle you're living is forever. You have to exercise and eat healthy for the rest of your lives if you want to reach your weight-loss goal and stay there. So I guess you can say that this column was sort of a little horror story after all, can't you? I mean because it's really horrible the way we treat our bodies and our health sometimes.I hope you're on program and, if you're not, stop slacking and get back on program...today!Love,
