Don't Let Food-Pushers Ruin Your Diet

FREE DAILY DIET TIP

By Carly Young, Special to LifeScript

Thursday, June 5, 2008

The holidays aren’t the only time when you’re

surrounded by a tempting spread of unhealthy foods.

Birthdays, promotions and family dinners happen all

year long, and hosts are often offended when their

guests don't eat the food they lovingly labored over.

Nothing can derail your diet like a pushy

mother-in-law who lays on the guilt when you refuse a

second slice of her homemade meatloaf. When a relative

pressures you into eating more, you’re caught in a

conundrum between wanting to please and not wanting to

consume unneeded calories. So what’s a dieter to do?

Here are some strategies for dealing with pushy

food-pushers:

- If you don’t want to hurt your sister’s feelings by

refusing one of her famous homemade brownies at the

end of her dinner party, then make up for it by not

eating a dinner roll with the main meal and only

eating half a serving of rice or potatoes. When you

know you'll be indulging at night, you can cut out a

serving of carbs from your lunch by wrapping your

sandwich in lettuce instead of piling it between thick

slices of bread.

- Pair your refusal of the food with a compliment. For

example, say “I’d love some cheesecake, but I’m so

full from the delicious chicken parmesan that I can’t

eat another bite!”

- Just say no! If a slice of pie or a second helping

of mashed potatoes will ruin your diet, just flat out

refuse it. If the person trying to serve you grows

offended, just remind them how much you need their

support to meet your healthy lifestyle goals.

Eating food just because someone pressures you into it

will lead to unwanted weight gain. Don’t let anyone

bully you into eating food you don’t want because at

the end of the day, you’ll be standing on the scale

alone with only yourself to answer to.
