Laurie - Of course we remember you. You are the one who is so

inspirational to all of us. You are the one who went into the hospital

(last time) with such a positive attitude. But we sure didn't expect

you to do a return engagement! We thank God that everything is under

control, and I personally request that you send that menu to DRMC!

Bobbe - ('98 top wt. of 284) 3/12/03 268.5, 9/9/03 196 = <72.5

lbs.> If you can dream it... you can do it! God, give me the

dream that you planned for my life. Don't postpone joy.

Hi -

OF COURSE we remember you. In fact, I was going to go hunting through the member list and see if you were still a member yesterday (you and a couple of others that got quiet LOL).

Did it not work out for you on the MOVES diet you started? That's the last I remember, you were transitioning from SB to MOVES....

Hugs to you over the weight gain - you can do this!

Hi group. I haven't posted in a long time. I really need some help and encouragement. I got stuck at 277 and stayed there for 6 months. I got really frustrated and just quit trying. I didn't weigh or anything. Well, I decided to get on the scales this morning and I am up to 296.6. This is my heaviest I have ever been. I am very disappointed in myself and I had a cry fest. I know what I have to do and I think I am prepared to do it. I am going to go back on South Beach Diet (low carb). I will probably post every day to keep myself acountable. Hope you all are having a great weekend.

HI , The moves diet is very restrictive and I felt really deprived doing it. I am going to go back on South Beach. I am seriously considering gastric bypass surgery. I have so many health problems that are related to my weight that my insurance will cover it. So, I am looking in to that option. It will have to be after the first of the year though. Anyway, until then, I am going to try really hard to take some weight offf before that time. I see that you cancelled the WWer membership. what is thin within? I have never heard of this.

>I got stuck at 277 and stayed there for 6 months.

I check back in my journals and see I've been bouncing between 272 and

282 for over 10 years now. Once in a blue moon I starve myself on 1000

calories and get down to 269 for a day or so but it bounces right back

up. I did it again 2 weeks ago, right after vacation, in preparation for

my doctor's appointment last Monday. I was back to 271 on Friday, even

though I was still eating 1000 - 1200 cal and did my hour of exercise

every day last week.

>I got really frustrated and just quit trying.

I get frustrated but never quit, because I know I would go back to the

same weight you are now - I did it in 1999.

Right now I figure as long as my blood pressure is doing okay, all my

lab work is within normal values (once we get that thyroid to stay where

it belongs), and I stay active enough with exercise to relieve stress

and keep the aches and pains in check, I'm not going to obsess too much

about the numbers on the scale. I'm already eating low-fat, whole

grains, low salt, low sugar, low-cal, and vegan - what more can I do?

I'm certainly *not* going to go to a mostly red meat low carb plan. It's

really not that healthy, especially with my history of raised liver

enzymes thanks to a med I was taking. Besides, I can't *afford* to buy

all that meat.

>I am going to go back on South Beach Diet (low carb). I will probably

South Beach is good, but I heard it has the same problems as many have

with the McDougall plan (that low cal vegan plan I described) that I'm

on. The books say that as long as you eat only the allowed foods you

don't have to restrict the amount of foods you eat, to eat until you're

satisfied; don't limit portions, don't count calories, right? Well, if

you're like me, it's way too easy to need over 2000 calories worth of

food until you're " satisfied " and not hungry any more. I've read on SB

message boards that many people have to do as I'm doing with McDougall -

do portion control in some form. Some people count calories, others are

using Weight Watchers Points with South Beach (or McDougall allowed)

foods.

No matter what the author of any day's most popular food plan say,

weight loss is *still* and always *will* be calories in versus calories

burned off. Each person is unique and needs to find what calorie level

is best for them, based on their own activity level. I'm sure if I did

longer or harder workouts I could eat more than 1200 calories, or even

lose weight on 1200, but it's just not possible. At this point in time I

just can't be any more active than I am now. *You* have to find out how

much food *you* can eat based on how much activity *you* do to lose

weight. That's where those food journals come in handy. It may take a

month or so of tweaking before you find the right levels, but it'll be

worth it in the long run.

>a, I know how it is to be swollen with water weight. My hands and

feet are swollen right now and they are puffy and red.

Do you have any diuretic prescription? Does your doctor *know* you're

retaining a lot of water right now? If not, perhaps it's time to let him

know and get treated for it. If you do but they're not working well,

it's time to tell the doc and get a different prescription. Don't suffer

in silence!

> My blood sugar has been up and I have been feeling like doo doo. I

can't breath and I am easily winded.

Getting back on the South Beach plan with its whole grains and no sugar,

along with some mild exercise, will help tremendously in feeling human

again and getting those sugars back under control.

>We are having a problem with them rotting before they ripen though.

I'm jealous of you people and your prolific gardens. One of the hazards

of apartment living is no access to the dirt, and I have no windows with

decent enough light to grow anything in. Oh, well.

>I am going to go back on South Beach. I am seriously considering

gastric bypass surgery.

Don't forget that your diet is going to be even *more* restricted - and

for the rest of your life - after you have surgery. You'll also have a

load of nutritional supplements to take from now until you die because

of your altered digestive system.

If you eat for reasons other than hunger right now you *will* continue

to do that post-op. And as a can tell you, many WLS surgeons want

you to first lose a certain percentage of your current weight as proof

you *can* follow a very restricted food plan, because they really don't

want you to rupture your stitches or run into other immediate post-op

complications. There's still dozens of post-op complications to worry

about, too, like chronic nutritional deficiencies, strictures,

ulcerations and infections at the operative site, brittle bones, and so

on. And good luck finding a doctor to treat them if/when the occur. Many

WLS surgeons want no part of you after your first post op check up

office visit. If you run into a complication a few months or years down

the road, you'll need to find a different doctor to handle them.

Before making any decision, look at sites like Sue Widemark's

http://obesitysurgery-info.com/

and visit some of the groups made up of people who have had the

surgery but have had life-altering complications.

And remember that you do not become thin for life with WLS. You'll lose

a large amount of weight, probably even getting into the healthy BMI

range, within 2 years, but what most doctors don't tell you ahead of

time is that weight gain *is* expected, and the final outcome at the 5

year mark is about a 20% loss of your original high weight. That is, if

you start the process at 296 you might (no promises) get down to 130 or

so, but 5 years from now you'll be counted as a long-term success if you

weigh 240 or so. Don't you think you can reach that number in 5 years

without major abdominal surgery and amputation of healthy organs?

Go in with your eyes wide open, not with stars in them from the

advertising team that sing only praises and false promises.

Overeaters Anonymous may be of big help for you.

http://www.oa.org

Read the web site, order some literature, join some mailing lists or

message boards, maybe even attend a few meetings, either face to face or

on-line ones. The people who have the most success with OA are usually

the most spiritual ones.

Sue, I do have a diuretic and it is not working very well. I have an apointment to go to the dr next week. I have got to get back in as it is time for my 6 mont blood work.

Ahh apartment living. I used to live in an apartment. I lived in one for 6 years and it wasn't too bad. I grew tomatoes in pots on the breezeway. Of course I lived on the ground floor.

Seriously consider it. Slow and steady wins the race, as they always say. There are several of us here that can attest to that.

Me: 3 years, 65 lbs

That's *only* an average of 22 lbs a year and at that same rate, it will take me another 3-3.5 years to get there, but hopefully I am dealing with all the reasons along the way behind the sugar binges, etc.
