Some of us have never learned how to drive. So we just purchase as state ID.

You get them at the DMV. They cost less then a drivers license and there is

no test to take. You need to bring proof of ID, like a birth certificate.

Some states require 2 pieces of ID to get the ID. Mine is good for 4 years.

Then I just need to renew it. It looks just like a drivers license but says

not valid for driving.

Why rush it? Your car insurance will double as soon as he gets his

Well, other than wishing for it, I am not rushing it. That's one thing I

already checked into, is the car insurance thing, so I know it is gonna be

ugly. For now, I know where all the documents are (Birth Cert, Soc Sec card,

proof that I am his mother and have custody, etc) so when he's ready, we'll

do it.

Right now, it is more an annoyance because I have to arrange for him to get

places or help him get there (I.e. Bus $$, etc).

I've put the study guide out and when he's ready to go take the test for the

permit, we'll go...

Finances and our lovely economy push it farther and farther away. Right now,

Driver's Ed costs $400 for the kids to take and (I am pretty sure) he wants

braces more than he wants to drive right now, anyway.

Braces start on 1/19/09 and will be on for 18 months, so that will put us to

almost his 18th b-day anyway.

We did that when we lived in FL when our kid refused to get his permit

then. Since we knew by that time we were going to be headed back to NJ

in a few months we didn't push it, because he could get a permit in FL @

15 1/2 but not in NJ until a year later.
