Guest guest
Dogs Getting The Flu In South Florida http://www.wftv.com/news/5003809/detail.html POSTED: 5:32 pm EDT September 21, 2005 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A strain of the flu is spreading across Florida -- but this form of influenza attacks dogs, not people. Florida agriculture officials say they are seeing a jump in the number of cases of canine influenza being reported at shelters, boarding facilities and clinics. The cases are being reported across the state, especially in South Florida. The respiratory disease causes symptoms similar to kennel cough but is more serious. Officials say canine influenza usually requires the attention of a veterinarian. The virus is highly contagious. The state is concerned that the spread of the virus could increase as Hurricane Katrina evacuees temporarily relocate to Florida with their pets. Some develop more acute symptoms and among those dogs the mortality rate is between one and five percent. Canine flu is a newly emerging disease that was identified recently in racing greyhounds by University of Florida researchers. Guest guest
My mold house / sick dog story... When I first moved into my mold house (high levels of stachy/asper), my dog suddenly became really ill, and kept throwing up. He also wouldn't stop eating grass, I presumed because his stomache was bothering him, but I expected it to subside in time; perhaps he just ate too much grass, but I think he was more sensitive to mold and was trying to let me know. Later in the week, I was weeding in my front yard and he ran outside, and before I could stop him, he began gobbling up the pile of weeds I had just pulled. Very odd to watch. Then he continued to throw up even more. I ended up taking him into the ER that evening, and they thought perhaps he had a blade of grass/foxtail stuck in his throat, that, either he was trying to clear by eating more grass, or possibly it was caused by eating from the weed pile. Remains a mystery, although they retrieved a blade of grass from his throat, but no foxtail. Two days later, and much more money, he was released from ICU and appeared fine for the next year or so. It wasn't until I took a month-long vacation out of the country, a full year later, and on my return he was very sick, and was having trouble coordinating his back legs to be able to walk. I took him in to multiple vets for second and third opinions, only to have them say he was an old dog (14) and it was probably " Cushings Disease " which is expensive to treat. He passed the first test with flying colors, but his symptoms didn't match up, and because he didn't have excessive thirst, they were unable to define how to treat him, and monitor his progress. Shortly after this is when I started to become very sick, so I eventually assumed the problem was due to mold, although I was very reluctant to believe it at first...never heard of anything like this before, and certainly had never experienced mold making me sick. " Lucky " turned 15 in June, and keeps on going. He's living with my mom, who apparently isn't sensitive to mold. He's on his " last leg " , and still has trouble walking, but his tail is still wagging, and he loves living with is grandma, although I do miss him very much, I happen to react to him when I'm around him, as well as my mother's house. Coincidence? Old Age? Mold? Who knows...some day we'll know more.
