School workers found mold behind one bookcase in a classroom, prompting an investigation throughout the school, said Gerry Koziel, risk management director for the district. The 16th Street school sustained some roof damage and water intrusion from flooding from the September hurricanes, Koziel said. The mold recently was found when new carpet was being installed in the school. Rosewood Principal Debbie Dillon said she has not heard any complaints from parents or staff. A letter from Koziel was sent to Rosewood parents, and only a few parents asked her about it, she said. Koziel said each classroom is being inspected by an environmental company to ensure there is no additional mold in the school. Bookcases against walls with windows and baseboards are being pulled out to check for mold, he said. Dillon said students will be moved to a portable classroom while work is done in their regular classroom. About 560 students attend the school. Meanwhile, workers returned to Osceola Magnet School last week after suspicious spots were found on the school's music room walls, Koziel said. No mold was found when drywall was removed in the music room, Koziel said. Mold remediation is continuing in the administrative wing at Sebastian River High School, Koziel said. Remediation work was completed in affected classroom areas so students could occupy the rooms, he said. Mold was found at Osceola and SRHS after the September hurricanes. Parents and teachers said the mold was causing people to be ill. Work began July 7 at SRHS, where mold was more extensive because of damage to the roof in September. Five teachers were moved to portable classrooms last school year because of the problem. Mold remediation at Osceola was completed by the end of June. - colleen.wixon@...
