Library officials still working on mold issue

Basehor Community Library officials received a report Tuesday from

one of two clean-up companies hired to inspect damage and test

samples of mold found in the library's south wing.

The library board of trustees was slated to discuss the report at

its meeting this week. Library director Carla Kaiser said she wanted

to brief library board members before making the report's findings

public.

She did reiterate that the library building is safe and there is no

danger to patrons.

After heavy rains in recent weeks, water leaked into the library and

seeped behind a bookcase in the library's " easy reader " section.

Upon inspection, library officials found a mold patch on the wall

behind the shelf.

The section of the library has been sealed and closed to the public

until the situation is resolved.

Kaiser said library officials would wait until both reports have

been submitted before taking action.

" We will follow the recommendations set out in the reports we

receive, " she said. " And we still have to address the problem of how

water got in in the first place.

A representative of one of the inspecting companies told library

officials that if the problem area is less than 10 square feet --

which it appears to be -- then protocol calls for removing the

damaged area and repairing it.

The library does not have definitive timeframe for when the problem

would be fixed.

But Kaiser said, " We obviously want to get that part of the library

up and running as soon as we can. "
