WTVJ-TV in Miami reported the water and moisture can create a health hazard. While toxic mold has received more attention, common mold spores can be very irritating to those who are sensitive. " People who have asthma, people who have allergies are susceptible. People who have respiratory diseases either in the sinuses or the lungs, " ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Astor said. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said controlling moisture is the key to keeping mold under control. Drying out flooded areas might require a pump or a wet/dry vacuum. They suggest homeowners should open windows and doors and use dehumidifiers that blow water out, not in. When cleaning, health experts recommend an N-95 respirator to prevent you from breathing in spores. You should also wear gloves and goggles. The Environmental Protection Agency does not recommend using chlorine bleach for routine mold cleanup. Large cleanup jobs will require professional help and they should check for spores in air conditioning units and vents.
