Abstract | Table of Contents | Question About This Report ?

Americans have the world's safest food supply, yet there are 323,000

hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths related to food-borne diseases

annually. Pathogens, rather than pesticide residues or GMOs, are the

cause, and while some pathogens are on the decline, others are on

the rise. In addition, new strains and new pathogens periodically

emerge, some in products where they were never before detected.

These conditions are due to changes in food production and

distribution, globalization of the food supply and more imported

foods, new packaging technologies, and changing consumption

preferences. The outcome is that there is increased need for

processors to test their products for pathogens, as well as for

pesticide residues and GMOs, in order to satisfy consumers,

regulators, importers, and other interested parties. BCC looks at

the market influences and regulatory and technological forces

shaping each testing segment, and makes sales estimates and

projections for 2000 and 2005.
