UPOI - The PLHA movement in India

Dear Friends,

On behalf of UPOI (United PLHA Organizations of India) I am happy to

inform you that the Apex body of PLHA organizations in India has been

formed.

First National Level Meeting of UPOI took place on 15th and 16th of

May 2004 at Mumbai Districts AIDS Control Society's Conference hall,

where activists/representatives of PLHA organizations of India

participated. Mr. Ashay Kurnurkar is unanimously elected as President

of UPOI

UPOI is presently head quartered at Mumbai at: C/712, Sharayu Apt.,

UPOI is a group of PLHA organizations from various parts of India,

who have chosen to provide SOLUTION- (UPOI) to avert the effects of

HIV/AIDS epidemic by mobilizing and empowering PLHA and PLHA

organizations in India and strongly lead PLHA organizations in

improving their unity in India and to protect the Human Rights and

raise voices of PLHA against adversities faced by them.

UPOI is the National Level Apex organization of PLHA and PLHA

organizations in India, open for all PLHA, PLHA organizations and

their networks of all levels working on the basis of sovereignty and

equality.

UPOI will determinately work to provide all required services in

improving unity, Quality of life of PLHA in India. UPOI wants to

create congenial environment among PLHA organizations in India

strengthening PLHA movement in India.

Broad purposes of UPOI are:

1. To maintain, accelerate, upgrade efforts to provide quality,

affordable and easily accessible care & support and improve the

greater involvement of PLHA and their organizations in India and

reduce stigma and discrimination in the Epidemic.

2. To develop friendly relations among PLHA organizations in India

based on respect for principal of equal rights and self-determination

of members, and take other appropriate measure to facilitate and

strengthen unity and PLHA movement.

3. To achieve Local, Regional, National and international

cooperation in developing and strengthening PLHA organizations in

India and to reach PLHA in India so as to empower them to take their

own decisions.

4. To be a center for harmonizing actions of PLHA organizations and

governmental and nongovernmental organizations in attainment of these

common ends.

5. To provide face and Voice to the issues relating PLHA and PLHA

organizations in India.

6. To participate, undertake and facilitate ethical research on

issues related to HIV/AIDS including curative therapies.

UPOI appeals to all PLHA & their organizations to join hands to

strengthen PLHA Movement in India. Pl. send us your suggestions,

opinions & concerns.

UPOI is looking forward for suggestions, comments and active support

from all Agencies & individuals to strengthen the PLHA movement in

India.
