IAQA has published the Web page " Disaster Restoration Information, " to help victims of natural disasters recover more smoothly. A link to this valuable information can be found on the front page of IAQA's Web site, www.iaqa.org. ADVERTISEMENT Because consumers need to be wary of fly-by-night operators seeking to take advantage of water-damage victims, IAQA has listed five warning signs to identify potentially unethical contractors. Examples include contractors listing themselves as the beneficiary for funds from the Federal Emergency Management Association, to insisting on a 50 percent deposit plus the cost of materials. IAQA's Web page also outlines a checklist of qualifications for restoration contractors. The page links to industry-recognized programs dealing with indoor environmental inspection, mold remediation, and water restoration services. Using these links, visitors can easily access directories of qualified professionals and read useful recommendations about water damage clean-up. IAQA's " Disaster Restoration Information " Web page lists established government and industry standards and guidelines dealing with indoor air pollution, the cleanup of water damage, the removal of mold, and the cleanup of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. A direct link to the Disaster Restoration Information page is www.iaqa.or g/disaster_restoration_information.htm The Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) is a nonprofit, multidisciplinary organization, dedicated to promoting the exchange of indoor environmental information, through education and research, for the safety and well being of the general public. Guest guest
It is heartwarming to see the outpouring of sympathy and support for survivors of natural catastrophies. But at the same time, it is impossible for a mold survivor to watch a friend or relative or doctor who is distraught over the devastation without pondering, " Is this the same person who spit in my face and called me a liar when I lost my house, my job, my health, my former life? " If people acted toward people devastated by victims of Hurricanes and Tsunami's the same way they acted toward mold survivors, they would be sending emergency teams of psychologists to try to talk them out of their troubles. Instead of water and food, they would be distibuting advice and information about avoiding hysteria and stress. Instead of housing and shelter, they would throw people out on the streets and tell them to " Take responsibility for yourself and get a life " . Instead of contributing money to rebuild, they would be hastening to take advantage of the economic possibilities afforded by the exploitation of people desparate for basic needs. Instead of sympathizing with the victims losses, they would talk about the stupidity of people who live in low lying areas and deny insurance to anyone dumb enough to build a house there, and try to pass laws to prevent it. They would say " You think YOU " VE got it so bad? Look at those who didn't survive and count yourself lucky! Quit complaining " Mold survivors wish they had been hit by a natural disaster instead of an " unnatural one " . Their lives may still be destroyed, but at least they wouldn't have had to learn the awful truth that " friends " , family, and people they trusted and who can be so strangely supportive of total strangers would mysteriously turn on them like a pack of Jackals for having suffered a devastating misfortune of comparable dimensions. Perhaps when Hurricane survivors start suffering from the effects of their water damaged moldy houses and expressing the conditions of their biotoxin illnesses, they may find that Support turns suddenly to Scorn. You know what I'm talking about! -
