Guest guest
Mold Forces Evacuation Of Apartment Complex POSTED: 4:30 pm EDT September 7, 2005 UPDATED: 6:11 pm EDT September 7, 2005 http://www.nbc17.com/news/4945475/detail.html RALEIGH, N.C. -- Mold is about to force more than 30 people out of their homes in the New Horizon Apartments complex in southeast Raleigh. The city owns the affordable housing complex on Street, and officials said the residents have to go so crews can start cleaning up. Also, the mold could make some residents sick, officials said. Residents like the complex, saying it's convenient to downtown Raleigh and local bus routes. But after a routine inspection discovered mold spreading throughout the apartments, residents said they are prepared to pack up and leave for good. Daisy Winston takes 10 medications and wonders if the mold has anything to do with her ailing health. " I have this recurring cough, " Winston said. Winston's son, Dennis , also lives in the complex. Mother and son said they hope to find apartments close together after they move. The city has assigned two people to help the people find new homes. Those who can't find a place that works will receive assistance with moving expenses from the city. The city will host a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chavis Community Center to help residents. Anyone who would like to help is asked to call the Raleigh Community Development Department at (919) 857-4330.
