duct cleaning

I seem to remember some posts about this from some time back, but I was unable

to find

them.

I was wondering if there was a good way to clean the ducts out....I have tried

vacuum

method, and even the scouring method, but unless they spray them down it bothers

me.

And the spray can't be good for you either. And the effect doesn't last. These 2

methods

are the only ones I have found locally.

The first step for duct cleaning is to find one certified by the

National Air Duct Cleaners Assoc - NADCA. Go to www.nadca.com for

details. You can also go to the Monster Vac site at

www.monstervac.com and get some excellent info from the Free Reports

box at the upper right hand corner.

What do they spray with, KL? Water? Anti-microbial? Deodorizer?

Sealant?

Thanks for the reply, Carl.

They sprayed with some kind of EPA registered anti something or other. Maybe

microbial;

a sanitizer, I think. It really helped, though. I am checking out the NADCA

site, and it looks

like mine was likely done to the correct specs.

Maybe the problem is more in the design of my ducts. They were from 1952. I

noticed

when the worker was in the basement removing the adhesive residue that the

chemical

took no time at all in coming up into the ductwork and blowing out into the

bedroom on

the 2nd story-and the system was turned off at the time. The natural airflow of

the house

routed it through the ducts.

The cool air return is not really a duct. It is the space between the joists,

covered with foil

sometimes, and sheetmetal nailed to cover it. When they brushed out the system,

I had foil

coming out at the filter for awhile. There is no such thing as an airtight

system here.

Maybe that is not bad, though, since maybe there is too much air for much mold.

So, the ducts are leaking badly. A neighbor told me I could get some foil tape

for heaters

and tape each and every joint I could find, and it should help. That's a big job

for me , esp

with all the mold that is stirred up right now, and the tops of the basement

ducts are

pretty dusty.

Also, I have a mold spot on the cement in an area from the bathroom I had torn

out last

week- it doesn't seem to be going away with the bleach- maybe borax next- or

maybe the

worker can chisel it out or something. I really hate this mold!

Thanks again,

kathryn

I have a friend who is hypersensitive to mold and still wants to use his AC this

year, but thinks it would be better to have the ducts cleaned first. I agree,

but what type of cleaning to look for, and should they spray a sanitizer? What

questions to ask the perspective duct cleaners?
