By Hillary Copsey staff writer September 9, 2005 Fort Pierce,FL PORT ST. LUCIE — Mold is shutting the doors of the Ravenswood Recreation Center indefinitely. Samples taken this week by Environment, Safety and Health, of Hobe Sound, show higher-than-normal levels of mold in the center at 400 S.W. Ravenswood Lane, Parks and Recreation Director Chuck Proulx said Thursday. Proulx ordered the samples taken after an employee complained last week of odor in the building. Late last year, mold left by hurricanes Frances and Jeanne was cleaned from employee offices at Ravenswood. Those offices still are mold-free, but Proulx said mold is growing in the walls of the auditorium, hallways, restroom and kitchen. " We don't know how it got there, " Proulx said, adding he did not know of any illnesses or odors reported before last week. Many activity and after-school groups meet every day at Ravenswood Center. Workers are trying to reschedule those activities at the city's other two recreation centers and will call groups as they find space, Proulx said. Because space is limited at the Community Center on Airoso Boulevard and Minsky Gymnasium on Darwin Boulevard, Proulx said the city might have to rent private space to accommodate Ravenswood groups while the center's mold-ridden areas are gutted and cleaned. As Ravenswood's doors shut Thursday, Proulx did not know how long the cleanup would take or how much it would cost. - hillary.copsey@... It amazes me how difficult it is for people to make the connection that mold spores are airborn and can travel from room to room, or building to building, riding on a breeze, through an AC vent, clinging to people's hair, stuck in their clothing, on a piece of paper, etc. Yet, nobody will question as truth that the yellow stuff blooming in a tree 100 yards away will cause them to sneeze, or that fumes from a toxic chemical spill can force the evacuation of a block, a neighborhood, or a city. Alas, I didn't understand the mold experience either, until I experienced it myself firsthand, and subsequently read others' experiences which were eerily similar to mine. Now that I think about it, it all makes perfect sense. But the general concensus is still that were crazy! That it's not possible. We have a culture where nobody uses their brain, and are too lazy to think things through for themselves to a reasonable/rational conclusion. We just read/hear what we are fed by the media/government/fill-in-the-blank, and accept it as fact, because it's easier.
