One of the leading international experts on indoor air quality will explain what makes an air cleaner effective in a presentation to be given Oct. 8 at the joint conference of the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA), the American Indoor Air Quality Council and the Indoor Environmental Standards Organization. Shaughnessy, Ph.D., manager of the Indoor Air program at the University of Tulsa, will discuss the most widely used method to assess the performance of new air cleaners. Dr. Shaughnessy's presentation on air cleaners will be one of more than 30 seminars and discussions featured at the conference, which will take place Oct. 6-9, 2005, at the Hilton in the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. The first afternoon of the conference will open with three simultaneous workshops, including a panel discussion concerning legislation in Florida and other states addressing mold. The other two opening workshops address some of the latest technology and guidelines useful to practitioners in the indoor air quality industry. Recognizing that mold is one of the most publicized issues currently affecting the indoor environment, conference organizers dedicated over 25 hours of the educational program to various aspects of mold. Covered aspects of mold are to include standards, insurance, investigations, remediation, and laboratory analysis. Other indoor air quality research topics to be presented at the conference include the health effects of low-level exposures to several hazardous building materials; off-gassing of formaldehyde from materials used in residential heating, ventilating and air- conditioning systems; and particle buildup on floor coverings in schools. The speaker lineup includes dozens of notable industry experts who were all selected by a Program Technical Committee including representatives from all three sponsoring organizations. Abstracts were chosen based on originality, topic interest and speaker qualifications. All presentations will impart useful, practical information that attendees can take home and apply to their daily business activities. Organizers of the conference expect more than 1,500 professionals from various disciplines in indoor air quality will attend. Hundreds of attendees have already registered. Conference attendees will also learn details about the unification and consolidation plan recently proposed by the three organizations. Members of IAQA and the Indoor Environmental Standards Organization will take part in a historic vote that may shape the future of the indoor air quality industry for decades to come. The American Indoor Air Quality Council has already approved the proposal. Discounted " early-bird " conference registration is open through Aug. 30. Individuals and companies registering by that deadline will qualify to take advantage of a $100 discount, members and non- members alike. Exposition hall passes are also available. For further information on the conference or to register, visit www.iaqa.org or contact IAQA staff.
