" We continue to be vigilant regarding this concern. We will provide the public with an update in regards to this matter as soon as the information has been made available to us, " interim superintendent Larry said. The written recommendations expected today will be sent from Owens & Associates, a Mount Pleasant engineering firm. The report was prompted after parents of Greenwood students told Florence School District 1 officials earlier this month of their concerns about mold in the library and classrooms. At that time, said the district would work aggressively to correct it. After inspecting the problem, Owens & Associates reported that " unusual humidity around a 24-year-old unsealed rooftop heat pump " allowed air to be pulled into the school, which could cause moisture and mold inside the building. Tests are being performed by school maintenance crews on the system in an effort to confirm its cause. The crews also are sealing and covering the unit. The firm is expected to send the written report regarding the problem to Florence's Goforth of Goforth, Brown and Associates, which referred the district to Owens & Associates after hearing of complaints of mold on the school media center walls and on school library books.
