Before I became ill I had a health consulting practice and saw a number of

clients on steroids (prednisone) so have a little knowledge in this area.

First, would you share the age of your SIL, how long your SIL has been on

steroids, what dose she's taking, when she takes it and also any other meds

or OTC drugs/supplements/herbs she taking. All this factors into the side

effects of the steroids. I'm assuming your SIL is only ill due to toxic

mold exposure. Is she still in the toxic environment?

Thanks,

Rosie

I HOPE SHE'S NOT ON HIGH-DOSE DECADRON, ETHAN. IT CAN CAUSE SUCH THINGS AS

OSTEOPOROSIS, AVN (AVASCULAR NECROSIS), WHICH SHE DEFINITELYYYYYYYY DOESN'T

WANT, HIGH BLOOD SUGARS, WEIGHT GAIN & " MOON FACE " , AMONGST MANY OTHER

PROBLEMS. I WAS ON HIGH DOSE DECADRON & SOLU-MEDROL AT FIRST. THANK GOD, I

NO LONGER HAVE TO HAVE THAT......THEY WERE IV DRUGS AT ONSET, CAUSE I WAS SO

SICK I NEARLY DIED....

I can not believe that a doctor put someone on steriods for that long of a

period. It can destroy your bones (make them very brittle) and does not do a

great job on your heart or liver. I have to take sterriods once in awhile for my

MS when I have bad attacks. I have never been on them longer than a week at a

time. Even when it is so bad I can't walk very well. Tell your sister-in-law to

see another doctor. That is crazy!!!!!

Marcie, unfortunately some people with auto-immune disease have been on

steroids for years; yes years and they cannot get off them. What we try to

do if they cannot be weaned from steroids is complementary protocols meaning

we assess the potential side effects and nutrient depletions of the steroids

and other long term Rx meds needed and supplement accordingly. Dosage also

matters with short term and long term side effects.

I also was on steroids (IV at first) when hospitalized and then switched to

oral. The prednisone was a major factor that I'm still here today when I

was so ill initially.

Hi Marcie:

I'm so pleased you don't require the steroids any longer. What hurts me are

the little ones with kidney disease that must be put on steroids and often

their growth will be stunted. Also those with RA and Lupus require steroids

long term in order to function at all. It's very difficult as you well

know. I'm so glad you are receiving the IVIG treatments and I'll pray that

they will help you.

I am very sorry to hear you are soooo sick.(I really didn't know) Let me

tell you and the others one thing. I have to children (6 & 10) who pray each

and every night for all of you. They have in the past 3 weeks also been

praying every night for the Katrina victims, and pray that they won't get

sick like them, and the rest of you from mold.

As always I am so happy that I found this group. Wish I had it when all

this started 4 years ago. But, I didn't even know that anything existed

like this.

The information we get here, the support, being with others that don't think

were crazy, the knowledge, and friendship is just wonderful.

Also, having KC and Sharon there for help and support and knowledge has been

great. Sharon has helped me understand my daughters illnesses, and triggers

more than I could ever imagine. She has made having sick children so much

less complicated for me, and my daughter. It doesn't matter how sick she

is, she is always there to help me.

Our families prayers and love go out to each and everyone of you, who have

to live with this.

Of course . Will try best to keep in order of symptoms and this is

just a summary of the initial symptoms first few months:

Started Winter, 02. Initially chills, fever, major chest pains " bad

allergies " Inhalation painful and epigastric pain. Congested head (felt

Louisiana swamp had invaded my head) and ears and wouldn't clear no matter

what I tried, post nasal drip, chronic sore, scratchy throat, puffy face,

systemic edema, bloody discharge from my nose. Severe chest pains. Vision

changes; eyes swollen, left eye started to twitch then left eye lid swelled

I couldn't open my eye, woke with cloudy vision like being in a thick fog.

Systemic joint pain started.

Then brain fog, left brain damage (how to add 1+1 or balance a check book

or even write a check), my spelling left me, couldn't find my way home a

block from home, would wake up on the floor with 3-5 hours missing. Couldn't

remember medical terminology nor any of education really. At night in bed

my limbs would jerk and hubby complained I was vibrating the bed, Muscular

weakness, my arms and my feet didn't function as they should; started to

limp from edema and muscular weakness. Chest pain became worse, inhalation

almost impossible due to pain, epigastric pain increased, felt as if golf

balls stuck in there, severe heartburn like pains, couldn't eat without

intense bloating, discomfort and reflux, burning in stomach, upper and lower

quad of my abdomen swollen, rigid and painful to touch. Left clavicle

inflamed and hurting. Total urine incontinence. Ears hurt. Absence of

menses. Night sweats without perspiration (felt as if inside I was in a

steam sauna). Hair began to fall out.

Chest pain escalated, pain whenever I exhaled, felt as if I was having a

heart attack, constant pain along my sternum, then pleurisy like pain: any

movement one inch to the left or right felt like a hot dagger in my back and

sides. Had chills then the " sweats " . Either was bundled in fleece head to

toe or taking cold showers. My internal temperature regulation had short

circuited. Couldn't tolerate any changes in temperatures. Couldn't sleep in

bed, had to sit in a hard back chair totally upright without moving and

tried to elevate my swollen feet/legs which would throb with pain.

Difficult to move even an inch, could hardly walk and certainly not bend

over. Much coughing, remembered had nasty coughing spell and coughed up

foamy sputum with dark bloody specks. Temp increased to 101.

Then my back felt as if on fire. Neck swollen, lymph nodes very enlarged.

Frontal headache. Eyes had nasty discharges. Systemic joint pain escalated

where I couldn't do anything, pain intense, very dizzy as if a feather could

blow me away, constant thirst, unable to eat anything without side effects

and kept gaining weight.

My wonderful internist did all the required possible tests, X-Rays,

ultrasounds, blood and urine, etc. Sent to Cardiologist, full workup EKG,

Echocardiogram, doppler, etc. Had bi-lateral pleural effusion and

" mysterious other symptoms " . Hospitalized to have lungs drained, IV

steroids started. Felt better in hospital with oxygen and after lungs

drained. At home with the steroids felt somewhat better for a few days,

lost 12 pounds of the weight I gained in 2 days and then the symptoms

returned full force. This time though I couldn't walk at night, remember

sitting in a recliner, legs began to hurt horribly, wanted to get up and

relief myself and fell on the floor. I couldn't walk. Pain was intense.

Remember trying to crawl but every movement was intense pain and could only

move my arms and shoulders. Those were difficult days.

Thanks for asking,

Rosie

Rosie,

Our family is sorry you are having to go thru this also. It's interesting

to me when some of you share your symptoms. Sometimes I try to push aside

symptoms, as just being something else. Or, a symptom that I am having or

the kids are having that I would like it to be a different explanatiion,

something that a doctor could have a name for, and a solution, but they

don't. Then I hear some of your symptoms, and I just can't believe that

they are so simialar. Well, I can believe, but it is just sad that sooooo

many have to suffer for something that just seems so simple to many of us.

Everytime someone hear shares a symptom, or several, I feel better knowing

that it is just not us. But, on the other hand it just irritates me that no

one will just say " Yes, you are right. Mold will do this. " I don't care if

they have treatment or not. Geez, just tell us it does. We know already

know it. It would make it so much easier for victims to find help (Like Dr.

Shoemaker) if they would just say yes it does, I can't help with it, but

here is someone who can. Or this mold is making you sick, your symptoms are

from the exposure, you will need to find a specialist. How many times have

they poked you? How many times have they poked our kids, to the point of

histeria when they hear a visit to a doctor? Just to tell us nothing is

wrong, you/your kids are perfectly healthy, while go home thinking your

going to die you are so sick.

WOW!!!! Excuse that venting episode I just had, but boy that felt good.

Most days I'm alright, but after reading Rosie and 's symptoms

tonight, and relating many of the symptoms here at home, it just got the

better of me.

I hope you both will have better days to come.

I have a damaged spinal cord also. My first back surgery was suppose to be an

overnight

stay....yeah right. ( He first wanted to do it in his office.) The doctor was

cutting away some vertebrate with a hinged instrument and did not know it had

pinched onto my spinal cord. When he pulled the instrument out, it tore a hole

into the spinal cord sack. I remember waking up in the recovery room and the

doc. that did the surgery was there. He explained there was an accident and

informed me what happened. Of course he did not tell me he forgot to patch the

hole. I was sent to my room and I started to loose spinal fluid. It was

extremely painful...like I was being crushed. It started in my feet and after 3

1/2 hours of yelling for help, it reached my chest area and I stopped breathing.

The nurse had come into the room before and told me to quite down..I was

disturbing the other patients. I asked her for my doctor and she stated he left

after my surgery and turned is pager off. I told her to find another doctor.

Well that did not happen and my best friend was in the room with me

and a daughter of some lady across the hall. After I stopped breathing my

friend did CPR on me and the other girl ran to the nurses station. When I came

to, the room was filled with about 20 people. One guy leaned to my ear and said,

" I don't want to scare you but we are taking you to ICU. " I told him scared

hell, I have been yelling for help for 3 1/2 hours and have been damned scared

the whole time. When they got me to the ICU room and were transferring me to the

ICU bed, they dropped me. I kept telling them I wanted to go to another

hospital. Needless to say, they never informed me I would be there for a month

and had to learn how to walk all over again. Having MS did not make the progress

easy but I was a fighter and still am trying to fight. I took Baclofen and

Flexeril for awhile but stopped because I could not afford it. I have had to

have other back surgeries to fuse my back and it was much better until I was

exposed to the Stachybotrys mold. I have pain in my back, legs,

and no feeling in the butt area and left leg. ( only good thing about being

numb in the butt, that is where I take my shots.LOL!!)

I have degenerative disk disease also......along with the list of the other

stuff. I just try to take each day as it comes and pray for everyone that is

sick with mold disease that there will be help soon.

PLEASE TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS US ALL!

Sincerely,

Marcie

The worse part was later in the hospital. I was on a special bed that was full

of air and could not move anything but my arms. They would bring in food trays

and I could never reach them. I did not eat for 4 days. One day I asked a nurse

for a cup of hot chicken broth because I was so hungry. I was on a Morphine pump

and she placed the cup of hot broth on my chest. She crooked the straw and put

it in my mouth and walked out. Needless to say, I nodded out from the morphine

and the cup dumped on my chest and scalded me. She did this twice. There are

other awful things that happened but not for everyone's ears.

My police officer friends came to the hospital to see me and freaked out how I

looked. One Lt. cussed for the first time ever.

No...I never sued them. The hospital was closed down by the state from something

else after my ordeal.

Marcie,

Your story made me cry. You must have had a great deal of trauma from that

ordeal. I am

a long time RN and it breaks my heart to hear stories of poor nursing care.

That hospital

should have been closed down!
