Guest guest
Thanks Rosie for the info. I have a question that anyone can help answer for me. I have 2 young children. Who are extremely sensitive. I practice as closely as I can get to a dust mold free home. The HVAC system has always been a concern to me, the duct work and so forth. I went online tonight and read up on MERV ratings. Very interesting, and I will also be presenting this to the school on Thursday. MERV 11 is suggested for trapping mold spores at 85%, and dust, allergens. I do not see anything about a charcoal filter either.(does this exist in the stores?) They themselves suggest using this size filters in the air supply vents. So, here is my thought. Being a mother trying to control dust and indoor allergens, not just mold, is it plausable to buy the filters with this rating at the store. Dis-member them, cut them to size and insert them? I think this is something I will try this week, but some thoughts on it would be great. Any thoughts? I love to experiment with new things I learn about. I have always used those stupid little filters that are pre-cut. Well, I should say I have tried them on several occasions. I see nothing. (but dust) Stupid if you ask me. If someone has tried this, let us know how it worked. If not after I get some feedback, I will try it and let you know how it works.
Guest guest
Hi , See link below. I found these filters to be outstanding in construction for fit and quality, no paper. http://www.filtera-b2b.com/businessfilters/minipleat.htm#merv15 Fletch
Guest guest
WOW, thanx Fletch. Can you give me a suggestion as to which one you would use. I see they have the " 11. " Should I start with that, since it does what I want? What do you or others think? Also, quick question. Can't find the site, but I stumbled onto a site, and glanced at a sentence, it went into my brain and then I left the site and can't find it. But, it did raise this question for me. Will having something of this high of an effiencency hurt my furnace? Will the air still flow properly? Are there any concerns that I should consider or be aware of? Thank you so much for the link. I think that will save me a ton of time cutting, and fitting. hehehehe But, heck! Anything for my kids. [] Re: MERV Question Rosie or Others > Hi , > > See link below. Guest guest
Hi , I used their best MERV 15 and put weather stripping around it to prevent blowby dust since furnace filter frames are really poor. A merv 15 might be in reality only a merv 11 if dust escapes around the filter. The contruction is made up of mini pleats which is suppose to allow more airflow to make up for the restriction of a higher MERV. They have airflow charts at the link. I had to have a size specially built and they have a guy who answer your questions, but I can't remember his name. Give them a call. It did not hurt my furnace and I can't feel any restricted airflow if there was any. Fletch
Guest guest
Wow, thanx for the info. I am so excited to learn something new. I can't wait to try it here. I think it is a good suggestion for the school too. Thanx again, [] Re: MERV Question Rosie or Others > Hi , > > I used their best MERV 15 and put weather stripping around it to > prevent blowby dust since furnace filter frames are really poor. Guest guest
, I bought some activated charcoal prefilters that were being sold for a brand of air cleaners that I didn't have. However I cut them to size to fit my cold air returns. Motivation was a air contaminate spill near here that we were instructed to stay indoors and shut off air to outside. However I had old drafty house so I didn't feel safe. Over that I took some 2M Filtrete brand fabric I get at Home Depot and it helped to hold the two or three pieces of charcoal filter together as it took more than one piece. So all my household air now goes through the Filtrete filter fabric and also about an inch thick charcoal filter. I had to use the cold air returns as I have very old furnace that couldn't take too tight a filter. Even though this tightens up the air/slows it down, I had added a fresh air return to cold air return which increased the amount of air available to pull from so it works out. My furnace is 35 years old and it hasn't hurt the blower any and I have very few allergy symptoms. When I put the fresh air intake in a year ago, I immediately felt better too. barbb > > Thanks Rosie for the info. I have a question that anyone can help answer > for me. I have 2 young children. Guest guest
Thank you Barb for that insite. I think it is a great idea, and can't wait to have time to start using it. The site Fletch gave me last night about the MERV ratings and filters was wonderful. I am the weird one here. hehehe I get soooooooooo excited when I learn something new, that I almost can't sleep, I just want to learn all I can. Especially, if it will help my children. Thank you, [] Re: MERV Question Rosie or Others > , > I bought some activated charcoal prefilters that were being sold for > a brand of air cleaners that I didn't have.
