Guest guest
"WE GOTTA SAY..." Monday, 05 September 2011 Goodbye to the summer. And yes, today is Labor Day, the unofficial "end" of summer. Do you know what the celebration of this day is all about? It's all about honoring the men and women in our country who go to work everyday. It's a day to say thank you to all of those laborers who make America...America! Millions of Americans drive to work each day to labor on their eight-hour or longer shifts. And some of them labor not just at one job, some of them work two jobs. And, on top of that, they may even attend school at night. Now that's a lotta labor! Yes, today we honor all of you who work for a living. We honor the policemen and firemen who protect us. We honor the doctors and nurses who work to keep us healthy. We honor the auto mechanics who keep our cars running smoothly. We honor those people who have more dangerous but necessary jobs, like working in coal mines. (Hey, we need that energy for our homes their jobs provide.) And oh yes, we honor those beauticians who help keep us, well...beautiful! Ya' know, I was thinking this morning, if everyone who works for a living stopped working, even for one day, this great country of ours would grind to a halt. Oh, could you imagine? Everyone who works for a living plays a role in helping to keep our country humming along. When new people come to Slimmons, I like to ask what they do for a living. The other night in class, I had an interesting mix of students. I had a mediator, a couple of attorneys, a teacher and even a world-renown drummer! (Oh, I wish I'd brought my drum set with me so he could hit a few notes for us! LOL.) I've always taken an interest in knowing how people make their livings. Well, not many people have to ask what I do for a living. It's helping others take better care of themselves and I love every minute of it. Now let's get back to the Labor Day holiday...and, specifically, I want to know how you'll be celebrating? Are you having a barbecue? Maybe you're taking one last trip to the beach for the summer season. Or maybe you're having an intimate family gathering in your backyard. Lots of people will be celebrating Labor Day with a fork in their hands. Oh yes, they may have the day off from work but, today, they're putting their forks...to work! Oh yes, into the potato salad, a stop by the baked beans and...into their mouths the food goes! That ritual may be repeated over a hundred times, in just one sitting. That means you're making your body labor too hard trying to metabolize all of those extra calories. And after your Labor Day feast, what then? Will you get up from the table, walk to the family room, plop onto the sofa and begin flipping through the 575 channels available on your cable TV? Oh, dear! Please, don't celebrate this holiday by eating unhealthy then being lazy. Oh, it drives me crazy when people are lazy. As for me, I have my whole Labor Day planned. Of course, I'll be calling lots of people and sending out quite a few E-mails. I'll also be working on my binder for the Cruise To Lose. (Oh, I can't believe, it's actually next month!) And, as for you, I want you to put down that remote control! Get up off your buns and labor that body of yours with some good-for-you sweat. After a healthy meal, you could do with a nice walk this afternoon. Or how's about a swim? Swimming is a great exercise and burns a lot of calories. I know that many of you own some of my workout DVDs. Pop one in and let's move! In fact, you could even invite some of your guests in to sweat and have a good workout with you. I'm truly proud of our country and my fellow Americans who work hard everyday. I'm truly proud of our country and my fellow Americans who work hard everyday. Every night before I turn in for bed, I ask the good Lord to help our country pull itself out of these economic doldrums. I want to see enough jobs created so everyone who wants to work for a living will have a job they can go to everyday. Happy Labor Day, everybody!
