366!

Wednesday, 29 February 2012

2011 had only 365 of them but here in 2012,

we get...366! That's right

everybody, we get a whole extra day this year! Today

is February 29th which means it's...Leap Day!

As you know, a normal year has only 365 days

but, in a leap year, we get a whole extra day. How fab! And

tell me, what are you going to do with your extra day,

huh? Well, before you tell me, let me give you a

little background on why we have leap years. (It gets

a little complicated so bear with me.)

A leap year occurs because

every four years, we have to synchronize our calendar

year with the solar

year.

The Gregorian Calendar, the one we use, serves as the

standard calendar for the entire world. As I pointed

out earlier, a common year has 365 days. A leap year

occurs because every four years, we have to

synchronize our calendar

year with

the solar

year. A solar year is the time it takes the

earth to orbit the sun. But get this, it actually

takes the earth 365 and 1/4 day to complete

that orbit. So, in order to compensate for that extra quarter-day of time and

keep our calendars accurate, we add one day to our

years...every 4 years. Hence, Leap

Year! (See,

I told you it was a little complicated.)

I always wondered how people born today, February

29th, celebrate their birthdays. I mean, do they

celebrate on February 28th or March 1st? Hey, that's

a question faced by a lot of leap year babies. Did

you know about 187,000 people are born on this day

every year, uh...I mean every four years! LOL.

If you're a Leap Day baby, when do you celebrate your

birthday in a non-leap

year? The last day of February or the first day of

March?

I want you to really...LEAP into your

workout program today.

So let's get back to my original question. What're

you going to do with your Leap Day? Well, you know

I've got a suggestion for you. Hey, if it's okay for

our calendars to take that "leap," then it's okay for

us to

take a little leap, too. So, I want you to really...LEAP into your

workout program today by adding another 30 minutes or

more to your exercise time. I mean, what better way

to celebrate Leap Year than by giving your body a

little more sweatin' time?

I taught class at Slimmons last night and I suggested

all of my students do just that. I suggested they

leap into March by using this extra day in February to

give their workouts a little boost. Won't you

join us today?

Oh yeah, also on this Leap Day, I'll be doing Jimmy

Kimmel Live on

ABC-TV. So if you can, stay up a little late to watch

me or set your DVR's to watch later. It's gonna be a

lot of fun.

Leap into taking

better care of that wonderful body of yours!

In the meantime, do yourselves a big favor and don't

leap into an extra serving of food at lunch or dinner

today. Instead, leap into taking

even better care of that wonderful body of

yours. Your body deserves it because, God knows, it

sure does a whole lotta leaping...for you!

Love,
