Guest guest
MEDICINE'S BIBLE Monday, 23 January 2012 It's been around for a long, long time. And, because it has, we're a healthier society. I like to think of this very important publication as Medicine's Bible. You probably won't be able to guess what I'm talking about so let me just say...Happy Birthday to the New England Journal of Medicine! Whenever I need backup for one of my daily messages, I look to the Journal for the most accurate and researched information possible. Most of us never see a copy of this publication but I'll bet the name sounds familiar to you, doesn't it? I mean, how many times have you heard a medical report on the news that included these words...According to the New England Journal of Medicine. Lots of times, huh? In fact, whenever I need backup for one of my daily messages you read here, I look to the Journal for the most accurate and researched information possible. And, thank goodness, the Journal has been around for 200 years now. Their research and findings have helped bring medical practice in this country out of the dark ages and into the 21st century. Can you just imagine what medical practice must have been like in our country 200 years ago? No stethoscopes, no X-rays, no vaccines. Back then, if you needed surgery, you didn't get anesthesia. You probably got a shot of whiskey and the doctor may have had you bite down hard while holding a bullet between your teeth. (Oh, my!) 200 years ago, American's life-expectancy was only in the 40s or 50s for most men and women. That's right, when it comes to how long we live, we really have come, well...a long way, baby! And we can thank the Journal for helping us usher in the many medical miracles we've witnessed, just in our own lifetimes. The New England Journal of Medicine is the oldest continuously publishing medical journal in the world. The New England Journal of Medicine is the oldest continuously publishing medical journal in the world. It has touched our lives in more ways than you can imagine. From stroke victims, to heart attack treatments, to breast cancer research and in hundreds of other areas, the journal's work has, over time, surely helped save millions of lives. Maybe even the life of someone close to you. So today, I just want to give a well-deserved salute to this great American publication. Thank You, New England Journal of Medicine. You've done so much to improve the lives of so many Americans. I mean it when I say, you really are Medicine's Bible! Love,
