Guest guest
I've been on the phone again with people from New Orleans. (And found 10 of the 13 who were still missing! We're thrilled and thankful beyond words. Pray we find the other 3 soon.) So. The lowdown. This woman got stuck in a town in MS at a temporarly shelter. The man who owned the place was taking water from his ice machine, boiling it, and using it to feed the National Guard members staying there. The same man took food that the Guard had trucked in for their use, and was selling it to his customers. The refugees, including children, were being required to cook, wash dishes, and wait tables in exchange for being fed. The house he put them in had snakes in it. The woman had her hands in that water for hours on end, and has developed a severe infection of her fingernails. She saw a doctor later, who treated with an antibacterial, but it sounds like fungus to us! Nail specimens will be sent to a lab for testing to be sure. Pictures will be taken to document this. Reports about his actions are being made to the authorities. The point is, this is just one more story won't be seeing on the news. We spoke for a long time. We talked about all the pollution and all the lies and all the non-information the public is getting. She tells me the present catch from the Gulf is being inspected by the EPA, but is being sold to the public if they decide it's ok. No one seems to know exactly what they are testing for. These are the same people (EPA) who are being reported as having said the pollution is no big deal, so go figure. She just asked me to get the word out. Now, before somebody jumps me about harming the fishing industry, I want you to know that her husband is a shrimper, and his whole family are shrimpers, and have been so for hundreds of years. They know their fish, they love their home and their people, but they're not havin' it. They've lived their whole lives in those waters, and if it could still be fished or shrimped, they'd be out there doing it themselves. They don't feel they need the EPA to tell them what they already know. Whatever is in the water is in the shellfish, period - good bad, or indifferent. But they do feel the people have a right to know what's being done there and to have soe answers. I agree, and agreed to help send word. For the people here, we can only suggest you be careful what you buy from the market, until we can get some better information about what's going on there. Next up - the water. Word is, the water as far north as TN is being tested and found to have high toxin levels, post-Katrina. The thinking is that the massive storm surge caused a lot of backwash upriver. Everyone who has heard about it cannot understand why we see these stupid stories about proposed gambling palaces in NOLA, but nearly nothing on all the environmental fallout. The things that are wrong with that water are not fixed - and it may be that they can't be fixed any time soon. We also spoke about a series of deaths in our own family that all took place within a short timespan of about 3 years - 3 cases of cancer, 1 of Alzheimers. And a child with asthma and a lung that collapses on occasion. And a long, long history of bizarre behaviors. And a whole group of cousins who are mentally retarded. And the pollution. And the mold. And the friends with fibromyalgia. The aunt who was paralyzed for 3 years as a child for no known reason. Her sister, next door, with the literal dozen miscarriages of grossly malformed fetuses, who then died of Alzheimers . This woman I was talking with is a nurse now, and she knows these stories as well as I do. I had already started looking at these things in a new light when I got sick myself, and now she is seeing things differently, too. Things were not right down there before Katrina. And they're whole lot less right now. And all those local politicians (AKA " tools " ) can think about is keeping the Mexicans out and getting the money in. Can we say mold? Doubtless some of it. Hurricanes Betsy and Camille did plenty of water damage, too - just not as extensive. But the level of other toxins in the soil and water there were always just crazy. We think now that the amount of illness we always knew about was acceptable to us because we just plain didn't know any better, and neither did anyone else. They're ready to start over somewhere else. So are a whole lot of people - especially now that some of them have been back and seen for themelves what little is left besides wreckage and poison. This thing about rounding up people from shelters and taking them back to clean up the city makes me think maybe Kanye West was just a little bit confused about who doesn't care about who. Guest guest
Serena, That is horrible!!! If you are so inclined, could you get this message out to people to contact their legislators? All I am really trying to do is put some pressure on to make sure a Senate Staff Briefing takes place over the mold issue. Have a verbal, but am holding my breath until confirmation. Dear Friends, Please go to Congress.org. Then click on " Mold and Katrina: Who is Watching the Hen House? " Right now, this story is at the top on the right hand side. Put in your zip code and send a message to YOUR national and state elected officials that for the safety of the American public, this double standard regarding mold exposure needs to Stop! You can also access this SoapBox Alert by pasting: http://capwiz.com/congressorg/sbx/f/?aid=8106066 & r=1 Please forward this information on. Thank you for your help, Sharon Kramer
Guest guest
In a message dated 10/12/2005 3:25:25 PM Pacific Standard Time, ldelp84227@... writes: I would like to hear about the Senate Staff Briefing. We have a verbal commitment from the staff of one of the Senators to bring in some of OUR doctors to be heard by the Senate, rather than the defense expert witnesses/medical professionals that are so well connected to the CDC, which stifles medical research over the matter. It is suppose to be set up this week or next. It is a genuine opportunity for us to turn the corner over this issue. Sharon

I have been writing and calling for some time to legislators, press, blog sites. This one site a girl whined that I always talk about mold or multiple chemical illness or reactive airways disease, etc. We are just trying to save lives and at the same time try to get help. I think the hardest thing is that we can't believe that our government is this bad. The last I heard the legislation was in some hearings or something but that was some time ago. I would like to hear about the Senate Staff Briefing.
