Guest guest
SIGNS Thursday, 12 April 2012 It's one of the most common chronic illnesses to affect people with serious weight problems. I'm talking about diabetes. Diabetes occurs when your body's blood sugar, (glucose), level is too high which leads to your body not producing enough insulin. Diabetes has become a bigger health problem in our country than ever. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs in children and young adults. People with Type 1 diabetes usually end up having to take daily insulin shots. Type 2 diabetes is much more common. Older age, a family history of diabetes and obesity are high risk factors for Type 2 diabetes. Do you fall into any of these categories? Diabetes has become a bigger health problem in our country than ever. Why? Well, our more sedentary lifestyles have a lot to do with it. We spend more time watching TV, sitting at our computers or playing video games. In the meantime, we're not making enough time for exercise. (Which, by the way, helps prevent and control diabetes.) Now top that lack of exercise off with our bad eating habits. We're eating more processed and junk foods which are usually filled with fat and calories. You see? Our lifestyles are a big contributor to the surge of diabetes diagnosis in America. I want you to be aware of the warning signs of diabetes. Diabetes can lead to a number of other health problems, too. They include heart diseases, stroke, eye problems, kidney disease, foot problems, nerve damage, even teeth and gum problems. That's why, if you have diabetes and aren't aware of it, the disease can be doubly dangerous. Now, I want you to be aware of the warning signs of diabetes. --Increased thirst --Increased hunger, (especially after just eating) --Frequent urination --Unexplained weight-loss, (even though you're eating more and feeling hungry) --Fatigue, (feeling tired and weak) --Blurred vision --Headaches Diabetes cannot be "cured" but it can be controlled. So, do you often experience one or more of these symptoms? If so, and especially if you're overweight or diabetes runs in your family, please, please please get to a doctor soon and have yourself checked for diabetes. If you get a clean bill of health, great! But, believe me, if you have any of the symptoms of diabetes, your body is trying to tell you. Diabetes cannot be "cured" but it can be controlled. That's why, if you have the disease, early detection is so important. So, one more time, when it comes to diabetes, please don't ignore...the signs!
