When my doc first checked it 2 years ago it read <4, a number so low the lab tech said she didn't detect *any* Vitamin D in my sample. She thought maybe the machine was busted so she sent it to another lab to double-check and they got the same results. Instead of the super high dose my doc told me to take 5,000 iu a day for the first three months and retest. Many meds cause my liver enzymes to go up, so he didn't want to take the chance and tax the liver unnecessarily with the super high dose. That brought me into the normal reference range so he cut it down to 2 times a week. In 3 months it dropped down into the low 20's, so he increased it to 3 times a week and that has been holding me at around 30-34. During the winter and when I was sick with the flu (most of this year, unfortunately) I increased it to 5 times a week again, hoping it would help boost my immune system, and the weeks I was not sick I brought it down to 4 times a week. If I stay flu-free/sinus infection-free for at least 2 months I'll go back to 3 times again. This doesn't include the small amount of Vitamin D that's also in my daily multi-vitamin. When the doc does lab work again at the end of the year we'll see if the dose needs to be played around with again or I should just continue doing what I'm doing.
