Guest guest
i'm just starting my journey. I can't believe there are so many emotions that go with this. I am in serious denial of the affect of my weight on my health (slowly coming out of it, but struggling with it. Having breathing troubles this week.). I am afraid -- afraid of success, afraid of being hungry, afraid of attention. How did you get over the fear and get started on your weight loss journey? what got you to get up off the couch and start exercising? whats a good starting exercise? Thank you, Freda in VA
Guest guest
I don't know that the emotions ever go away, we have to figure out how to deal with them in other ways than stuffing food over them. For me, walking is pretty much the best exercise to start with because almost everyone can do that. Build from there. Denial and fear i'm just starting my journey. Guest guest
Freda, Boy, can I ever relate to what you wrote! I had so many excuses to NOT start, but I finally realized I was just fooling myself. I am afraid of people noticing I've lost weight because that leads to questions (and often times criticisms); I'm also afraid people WON'T notice because I'm putting in all this hard work, right? Shouldn't people notice?! The last time I got serious about losing weight, I started with the exercise--I used Walk Away the Pounds (the dvd with the 1-, 2-, and 3- mile walks all on one disc) and it was amazing because within a few weeks, I actually felt so much better that I decided to start a food journal just to see what I was really putting in my mouth. It worked really well for a long time; basically, until I injured my foot and back and also was going through emotional hell trying to figure out what to do about some stuff going on with my (then) 5-year old. The weight was getting harder and harder to take off, and back then I didn't know why. Cue January of this year and lots of testing to determine that I have a wheat allergy (bloating, mildly itchy skin, etc) as well as insulin resistance. Now I'm following a low glycemic index diet. It's not easy, but I feel 100x better. I was terrified to start " all over again " because deep down, I am afraid of getting off track and gaining it all back again. Anyway...this time around I started with figuring out the eating portion of my plan. Then, after a couple weeks (and that initial " whoosh " of weight loss), I started to add in exercise. I do light resistance training 2x/week and get on the treadmill 5-ish days per week. And an amazing thing is happening: the more I move, the more I WANT to! You only need the courage to start; after that, take it one day at a time. You can do it! Cheers, Bonnie > > i'm just starting my journey.
