WHY DON'T YOU

SLEEP ON IT?

Thursday, 05 April 2012

Need another good reason to get a good

night's sleep? Well, I have one for you. Got a tough

issue you're dealing with these days? Could it be a

family dispute? Problems at work? Are you in a big

fight with a good friend or significant other? Need

to make a big financial decision? Oh, it could be one

of a million things. Well, let me ask you something.

When you're facing a conflict or big decision, I'll

bet you've heard this advice more than a few times: Sleep on

it. You'll feel better in the morning.

Our brains use sleep to

help us deal with our strongest emotions.

But is there any truth to that old piece of advice?

Well, as it turns out, there's more truth to it than

we thought. A study in Current

Biology magazine

found that our brains use sleep to help us deal with

our strongest emotions, including any problems we may

be facing. Seems the unconscious part of our brains,

that part of our brains at work when we're sound

asleep, is better at making those more complex

decisions.

See, when we're wide awake and trying to make big

decisions on a problem we may be facing, we tend to overthink the

situation. On top of that, our emotions are at work

and we may end up making an important decision based

on the way we feel at the time, rather than basing our

decision on facts.

The act of sleeping slows down the emotional part of our

brains. While at the same time, it gives thereasoning part of

our brains a chance to kick in. So, what you've heard

is right. You've wrestled with that problem all day,

you've asked others for advice, you've weighed the

pros and cons. All of that and you still haven't come

to a decision. Well, it really is time to sleep on

it.

After a good night's sleep,

you'll wake up with a clearer attitude.

Oh sure, you'll go to bed with the problem on your

mind. But after a good night's sleep, you'll wake up

with a clearer attitude. Studies show that sleeping

on a big decision is much more likely to produce a

result you're happy with. As a matter of fact, I like

to sleep on it when I'm facing a big decision and it's

always worked for me.

Snap decisions are more often than not based on

emotional cues. And, we all know from experience,

those decisions based purely on our emotions are not

always the best ones. Our emotions can turn on a dime

and we're gonna make a decision based on how we

feel...at the moment? Not smart!

Your brain works hard for

you even when you're sound asleep.

Your brain is a remarkable creation and is

hard at work for you when you're wide awake. But your

brain works just as hard when you're sound asleep,

too. So it's true. A good night's sleep is one of the

best tools to help you deal with the tough issues life

may throw your way. So, got a problem? Well, don't

rush into an unwise decision...

Sleep on it!

Love,
