THE TORTOISE

& THE HARE

Saturday, 07 April 2012

, how long will it take me to lose

this weight? Oh yes, it's one of those questions I've

been asked most often over the past four decades. You

probably know how it is. You've been overweight for

years and really

wanted to

lose that weight, right? But, when you make up your

mind to lose the weight, no matter how much you need

to lose, you want to lose those extra pounds...in

no time!

Lose 50 pounds fast

without giving up the foods you love.

Oh, dear! Let

alone the fact that it took you years and years to

reach your present weight. But, no matter, you want

those pounds off and you want them off...now! That's when

the quick-weight loss schemes begin appealing to you.

Lose 50 pounds fast without giving up the foods

you love. Lose weight without exercise! Lose 2

dress sizes in just two weeks! Lose weight...FAST!

All of those zany claims got me thinking back to that

ancient story teller, Aesop. You remember Aesop and

his fables when you were growing up, don't you? One

of my favorites was his fable about The

Tortoise and the Hare. (Since this is Easter

weekend, I thought using Aesop's fable about the hare would

be perfect!) Okay, in case any of you forgot, here's

how it went...

Seems that old hare liked to brag a lot about how fast

he was. "I'm fast and when I

pour on the speed...no one can beat

me!"

The tortoise, one of the slowest creatures in the

forest got tired of the hare bragging about how fast

he was. So, he challenged the hare to a race. The

hare, laughing out loud, accepted the challenge. The

two of them came up to the race's starting line and...they

were off!

The tortoise stayed on

course, never worrying about how far ahead of him the

hare had gotten.

Like a bullet, that hare raced past the oak trees and

across the babbling brook. Meanwhile, the tortoise,

step by step, stayed on course, never worrying about

how far ahead of him the hare had gotten. In fact,

the hare became so overconfident that, midway through

the race, he stopped to take a little break thinking

how easy winning the race was going to be. Lost in

his thoughts of victory, the hare fell asleep.

Meanwhile, along came the tortoise. He kept

going and slowly walked past the sleeping hare. The

tortoise was slow but...he was making progress.

Later, the hare suddenly awakened from his slumber.

He looked ahead and was shocked to see the hare

approaching the finish line. The hare jumped up and

took off running again. But, right about the time he

could see victory, the tortoise took that last step and

crossed the finish line. The tortoise had won

the race! Hooray!

So do you sometimes feel like the tortoise when it

comes to losing the weight you need to lose? Oh, this

is just taking so long! And, like I said

before, that's when those quick weight-loss schemes

become most tempting. You're not losing weight fast

enough and you're looking for a way to lose it fast!

Trying to lose weight

fast...will not last!

Well, remember. The

hare was fast, too! But the bottom line

is, attempting to win this "race" by trying some silly

diet will only get you into trouble. Trying to

lose weight fast...will not last! (How many of

you have already discovered that?)

I say take a lesson from that silly-old hare, haste

makes waste. Stay on track and don't look

back. The tortoise can tell you: Slow and

steady will win

the journey to...the new you!

Love,
