NCC ideal body for fighting HIV/AIDS: Sunil Dutt

Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Shri Sunil Dutt has said that National

Cadet Corps (NCC) with a strength of over 13 lakh cadets can be the most

effective organisation to create awareness about the HIV and AIDS disease.

Inaugurating the three-day workshop at Delhi Cant today, he appreciated the

efforts being made by the NCC and UNAIDS for spreading awareness about this

dreaded disease. Shri Dutt stated that as long as medical science are not able

to develop an effective cure, awareness is the best and the only way to prevent

the disease.

Earlier, welcoming the Chief Guest, Director General NCC Lt Gen BK Bopanna said

that NCC being the largest youth organisation, in the country has decided to

combat the AIDS menace in the country under the Community Development Programme

in sustained manner by involving cadets. He said the aim of organizing this

workshop to impart knowledge about this killer disease to the cadets, who in

turn will spread this information in their respective regions by conducting

lectures and other programmes.

Addressing the cadets, UN Resident Representative and Chair UN Theme Group

UNAIDS Dr. Maxine Olson highlighted the problem of AIDS as it exists globally

with the special emphasis on poverty, lack of awareness, gender inequality, and

labour migration. Dr. Olson informed that some countries like Thailand have

succeeded in reducing the growth rate of this killer disease. But the countries

like India it is raising alarmingly. He said we have to take effective campaign

for the awareness to control this deadly disease.

The three-day awareness workshop on HIV/AIDS is being organized by NCC in

coordination with the UNAIDS from June 08 to June 10, 2004. The workshop is

being attended by 160 Senior Division and Senior Wing Cadets from all over India
