Guest guest
Is Mold a Pest? While the Debate Rages, Louisiana Dept. of Ag. Takes Action http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl? ACCT=104 & STORY=/www/story/10-10-2005/0004164444 & EDATE= Nisus gathers PCOs for mold prevention training NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- While there is considerable debate within the pest control, mold remediation, and insurance industries on whether mold treatment and prevention fall within the range of services for pest control companies, the Louisiana Dept. of Agriculture and Forestry has taken action by adopting a " Declaration of Emergency " amendment allowing Pest Control Operators (PCOs) to engage in antimicrobial [mold, bacteria & viruses] pest control for at least 120 days. This action will help provide sufficient numbers of licensed commercial applicators to control the growth of microbial organisms and reduce public health risks, while at the same time discouraging sham operators from preying on the victims of the disaster. (See http://www.state.la.us/osr/emr/emr_page.asp for the complete amendment.) PCOs from more than 78 companies in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas will meet at Lake Pontchartrain Maritime Museum in Madisonville, LA on Tuesday, Oct. 11 to participate in a training workshop organized by Nisus Corporation and Univar on the proper procedures for making flood damaged homes habitable. " Multiple dangers exist in many of these homes, including pathogenic bacteria, viruses and heath-effect mold fungi, as well as the future risk of structural failure through decay, " says Dr. Jeff Lloyd, BSc ARCS, PhD, DIC, FIWS., Vice President of Research and Development at Nisus Corporation in Rockford, TN. " Pest Control Operators can have an essential, positive impact on the heath and safety of homeowners as well as the long-term preservation of homes. " Dr. Lloyd suggests that careful steps be taken to deal successfully with flood-damaged structures, including getting information from reliable sources, eliminating moisture, disinfecting the structure, drying it completely and treating all remaining structural components with an EPA registered preservative (termiticide, fungicide and insecticide). " After that, appropriate repairs can take place, " he said. At the request of PCOs and associations, Nisus Corporation developed and organized the second training workshop along with creating and assembling the many supporting materials for the session. The educational materials include a summary 10-step " Structural Protection " checklist to help PCOs deal with the emergency situation. (See http://www.nisuscorp.com for PCO and homeowner versions.) The Nisus manufacturing plant has geared up to meet the needs of impacted states and is shipping product to all major pest control distributors in the affected and surrounding areas. Nisus Corporation manufactures a complete line of products for wood treatment, pest control, odor control, and sanitizing and disinfecting.
