Guest guest
Mold closes library doors By Edith Gaines, Staff writer Wednesday October 5, 2005 Hartwell Ga. http://www.thehartwellsun.com/articles/2005/10/05/news/news03.txt Hart County Library director announced Sept. 30 that the library would be moving to temporary quarters, following the discovery of mold in the library's air ventilation system. " We're going to have to close the building for a short while, " said , " But we'll all be working hard to restore library service in an onsite mobile unit. " We're hoping that the mobile unit will not take much longer than a few weeks to get in position, but a lot will depend on how quickly we can get utilities in place. " He said mold was suspected in August and consultations with health authorities began immediately, followed by an inspection by a certified industrial hygienist. But, there was no confirmation by an authoritative source until the release in late September of a report from Southeastern Environmental, a company certified to test for mold and to describe procedures for clean-up. After receiving the report, the board acted immediately and voted to close the library temporarily and begin arrangements for temporary quarters while the problem is addressed. said there may be some mold on the books, but from what authorities say, this is not a problem because most libraries in the southeast have at least a minor mold issue. The Hart County Adult Learning Center, which is attached to the library, does not have a mold problem because the two buildings do not share a heating/cooling/air conditioning system. said the exact cause of the mold is not known. " Apparently a combination of characteristics of the library's HVAC system created a better-than-average growing environment, " he said. It is unknown who will be doing the work until a final report on the specifics of what needs to be done is received. If the job is sizable enough, there will be a bidding process " Books and other materials can still be returned in the library book deposit box, and we will be looking to resume regular circulation services to our customers as quickly as we can, " said. edithgaines@...
