Guest guest Posted July 21, 2004 Report Share Posted July 21, 2004 BIOSTATISTICS AND RESEARCH METHODS: A PRIMER FOR HIV/ AIDS WORKERS The course will be held 9.30 am-5.30 pm on Tuesday August 3 and Wednesday August 4, 2004 in the ABK-AOTS conference room in Aminjikarai, Chennai 600-029. CONTENT: This intensive course will focus on basics of data, statistical summarization and research methods in use by biomedical and social-science workers in the field of HIV/ AIDS. Topics include, but are not limited to: overview of data types, parameters and statistics for continuous and discrete data, tests of association and independence, fundamentals of study design in quantitative and qualitative research, as well as ethical considerations in HIV/AIDS research. FORMAT: The course will be a combination of lecture, exercises and participant-driven discussion. Emphasis will be on enabling participants understand results of studies (both medical and sociological) published in the HIV/ AIDS literature, and helping them conceptualize studies and analyses of their own. FACULTY: The course will be taught by Dr. L. Ramakrishnan and Dr. Sai Subhasree Raghavan, with a guest lecture by Dr. Chandra Shekhar Balachandran. Dr. Ramakrishnan is a biologist by training and has served on the teaching faculty in biostatistics at the University of Texas at Austin. Currently he is Country Director for Programs and Research at SAATHII's Chennai office. Dr. Balachandran is a cultural geographer and founder of the Open Access Data Initiative of the Dharani Trust, Bangalore. ENROLLMENT: Enrollment is limited to 20, and those interested in participating may contact saathii@... at the earliest. There is no charge for the course, but a Rs. 100/ registration fee is to be paid in advance to reserve a seat (DD in favour of Solidarity and Action Against the HIV Infection in India.) This introductory course is being offered to those in the Chennai area who will be able to commute to the venue on both days. Depending on response and feedback, we will be offering this course in Calcutta and Bangalore in the near future. Courses covering more advanced topics such as multivariate statistics and meta-analysis are also being planned.
